Black History Month

February is almost over, Carnival has come and gone. With all the excitement from Calypso and Carnival, most people forget that Black History Month is celebrated during the month of February. Our Dominica Calypso in some ways reflects black history.

Did you know that Calypso in the early days was to show the boss-man that you could analyze and laugh at his way of life and behavior white he danced away, not knowing that he was the topic of your commentary. This was core to the self confidence of people who had often neglected (or been denied) their education, but could show that not all intellect was learn by books. Many times we don’t appreciate the past. The same past that made it possible for us to be we’re today.

Now all the reveling from Carnival (Monday and Tuesday) is done. Lets use the few remaining days in February to reflect on our black history, because we tend to forget the past. D*W SALUTES all the ones who sacrificed their life to protect our dignity.

When into whitchurch IGA Supercenter today on my lunch break to pick-up a few much-needed items. You will be surprise to know what Ec$50.00 can buy at Whitchurch IGA. I pickup eleven items, the subtotal came up to EC$45.57, and 15 % VAT-$5.70 was charged bring my total to Ec$51.27. Observe that the only two un-tax items are the Bridel milk-$5.27 and white sugar-$2.33, which have an X next to their prices. But I was taxed for ripe bananas, maybe these were special imported Banana…who knows.

Bill from a simple shopping

Sometimes it just amazes me how much we pay for food and basic household items. I mean don’t get me wrong I’m not against the Value Added Tax, just that you will be surprise to see what you’re taxed on.
