Dominica Carnival Queen Contestant Clarissa Nicholls

Clarissa Nicholls is the last child of Mr and Mrs Mayil Nicholls of St.Cyr in the Carib Territory. Born on 14th November 1985, Clarissa became the family’s treasure.

Her educational journey began at age 4. While still at the Salibya Primary School, then only eight years old, she found herself very sensitive towards youth involvement in drug abuse and joined the Carib Territory Club Pride. Later, she became a member of the Carib Territory Drug Busters Club. She felt the need to help curb social ills affecting society.

At 12, having been successful at the Common Entrance Exams, Clarissa began her secondary education at the Castle Bruce Secondary School. There she undertook business subjects.

Her studies did not preclude her involvement in community activities. She quickly became a member of the Karifuna Cultural Group, where she started as a dancer and progressed to playing simple instruments. She’s also had the opportunity to represent the group in functions in Dominica and the world by extension.

Clarissa also grew interested in pageants. Upon completion of her secondary education, she participated in and emerged first runner up in the 2003 Ms. Kalinago Pageant, held in the Carib Territory. She later participated in and copped the title of second runner up in the 2004 Ms. Wob Dwiyet Pageant held at the Old Mill Cultural Centre. Her consistent participation in cultural activities and her continuous work in cultural preservation was rewarded with the 2006 Young Artiste Award. One year later, Clarissa was crowned Ms North East 2007, held in Marigot.

Paralleling her participation in pageants was her continued education. While at the Dominica State College, she majored in Business Administration. Not willing to limit herself she also engaged varied subject areas and was awarded certificates in communication skills, masonry, tile laying, small business development and agricultural marketing.

At 22 she engaged a program in public speaking and worked at Wacky Rollers for a year. At 23, she joined the Salybia Youth Ministry and also took a course in computer literacy and was attached at the Ministry of Tourism and Legal Affairs as a junior clerk for a month.

Clarissa continues to be a vibrant individual who looks forward to pursue studies in Management and Hospitality.
