In Dominica and in most of the other Caribbean islands, whether volcanic or coral, is blessed will rich soil. Mountains, valleys, sides of the road, even in backyards gardens, show trees that represent the bounty of the “exotic” nature of the island - Breadfruit, guava, mangoes, lime, grapefruits, oranges, pineapple, cherries just to name a few. Cattle, pigs, chickens roam freely in the grasslands, rivers, reefs, and seas teem with fish and crustaceans. The road to environmentally friendly and organic living was already paved for us, but by the way we’re continuing to destroy what’s wild it will be soon all gone.
We have to stop importing process foods and continue with the old traditions left by our ancestors, who understood the harmony of nature is our survival. We must ensure that our lands and waters are kept free of destructive, non-degradable rubbish and pesticides. I’ve no doubt that environmentally-friendly tourism can provide a long future, rich in health and wealth, for us island people
