Here's another thing you can do to get maxim value out of a credit card: When you are at a merchant who accepts credit cards, make your best deal and then ask the merchant to give you a discount for immediate payment by cash or check. The merchant is likely to oblige, because the credit card company charges the merchant a percentage fee. Even in those cases where the merchant wants to add the credit card fee to your cost, you can still often convince the merchant to give you a discount for immediate payment, because the merchant must wait; often for as long as two months, for payment by the credit card company.

We found a credit card that "rewards" us with a percentage back for using it. We use it instead of cash, but we budget carefully and always pay the card balance in full each month. The credit card company hates that, because its promotion "hooks" many borrowers, but not us! You can do this, but be careful!
