Police arrest two in Western Union robbery

Police have reported a breakthrough in the investigations of a robbery which occurred at the Western Union branch in Roseau on Thursday morning. Police Public Relations Officer Sergeant Kenth Matthew told Dominica News Online that two men has been taken into custody on the same day and a substantial amount of the money was recovered. He said one security guard was slightly wounded in the incident and a pregnant woman employee of the establishment was traumatized. They were taken to hospital and subsequently released

Man punished for beating sister over text message

A Concord man who punched and squeezed his sister’s throat after she sent him a text message of which he disapproved,  has been sentenced to pay EC$1,500 by April 30, or spend three months in jail. Henderson Gordon appeared before Magistrate Candia George on Friday morning where he pleaded guilty to a charge of battery. The court heard from a police prosecutor that when confronted Gordon told police, “Officer I go to punch her in her mouth but I took her in her head.” According to the prosecutor, Gordon’s sister had sent a text which allegedly made unsavory remarks about his mother and father. Upon reading the message, the defendant went to his sister’s workplace and began assaulting her

Liberian national sentenced for cannabis and illegal stay

A Liberian national who has been residing in Dominica illegally for over a year has been sentenced to serve one month in prison after pleading guilty to the possession of cannabis. Additionally, he was ordered to be removed from the state upon serving that sentence. Spencer Garnett who came to Dominica on a boat which he worked as a cook, has been living in Portsmouth since his arrival even after his application to stay was denied by the immigration department. Garnett told a Roseau magistrate that he had no contact with anyone else in the world except with someone in the US whom he has been trying to get in touch with.

Oil tanker runs aground off Mero

Coast guard officials have confirmed to Dominica News Online that an oil tanker has run aground off Mero. A spokesperson said the incident occurred around 8:00 this morning. Information on how the incident actually took place is not available at this time however the coast guard is on the scene assessing the situation. It is not known whether oil is being spilt into the sea.
