Jose Marco Nogueira Viana is new Brazilian Ambassador to Dominica

His Excellency Jose Marcos Nogueira Viana (right) presents credentials to His Excellency the President Dr. Nicholas J.O Liverpool His Excellency Jose Marcos Nogueira Viana, new Resident Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Brazil to the Commonwealth of Dominica, presented his letter of credence to His Excellency the President Dr. Nicholas J.O Liverpool on Wednesday 27th April, 2011. The new Ambassador who also has a degree in journalism and a degree in international relations, will officially take up his duties here

Work on Chinese funded West Coast Road Development Project at an advanced stage

Photo credit: GIS Work on the Chinese funded West Coast Road Development Project which extends from Roseau to Portsmouth is currently at an advanced stage with asphalting works now taking place in the Picard, Portsmouth area. Three kilometers of work has already been completed. Chinese Project Manager of the rehabilitation of the Roseau to Portsmouth West Coast Project, Jing Hao, speaking through an interpreter, told GIS news on Thursday that the asphalting of the road in Portsmouth compliments other works now being done on the project

Antigua to get tsunami, earthquake monitoring station

Antigua and Barbuda has been earmarked as one of the sites in the Caribbean for a tsunami/earthquake monitoring station. The Global Positioning System (GPS) weather station will provide high quality data that will give better insight into hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis. It will provide information about the Eastern Caribbean subduction zone – the area most likely to generate earthquakes and tsunamis – and its associated faults, one of which is located northeast of Antigua. Support to Horticulture Program increases agricultural production

Farmer's demonstration under the program With the demise of the Banana Industry due to the loss of preferential markets within the United Kingdom, Dominica along with the other Windward Islands were forced to diversify their economies to cushion the shock from the loss of foreign exchange. The rural communities, with a strong dependence on bananas were most widely affected with many farmers completely turning away from the agricultural industry to other sectors for employment (tourism, security, transportation and other services). Some farmers still remained steadfast and ensured that the Agricultural sector continued to make a significant contribution to the Gross Domestic Product. In 2009, a new program the Support to Horticulture Sector Program, was initiated to further assist in the diversification of the industry and to also increase crop production and productivity for both domestic supply and export markets

DAPD observes Blind Awareness Month

The Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities Incorporated (D.A.P.D. Inc.) observes Blind Awareness Month from May 3-31, 2011, under the theme: “Increasing Awareness and Educating the Sighted World about Blindness. The objectives of the programme are to: •     Encourage sight preservation and the need to eliminate avoidable blindness. •    Assist persons with impaired vision to function in an independent capacity as much as possible
