Ministry of Education announces action plan to address violence in schools

Education officials The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development has put together an action plan to address the issue of anti-social behaviour among students at all secondary schools. This follows the conclusion on Wednesday, of a series of consultations between senior ministry officials and teachers, students and parents of the Dominica Grammar School (DGS), as part of efforts to address disciplinary problems at the school. In a release issued on Wednesday evening, the ministry condemned the attacks on the teachers as unacceptable behaviour which it said would not be tolerated at any school in Dominica. The release states that two recent incidents of violence at the DGS emphasized the need to revisit a comprehensive plan to address the Officials and students “the acute challenge posed by intolerance and aggressive student behaviour at secondary schools”.

Reggae artiste films video in Dominica

Niyorah Virgin Islands-based Dominica-born reggae artiste Niyorah is in Dominica filming a video for the title track of his new album. The album, entitle ‘Let love flow’, is expected to be release this summer. In an interview with DNO the Pointe Michel native said he decided to film the video in Dominica because he wanted to capture the island’s culture and share it with the rest of the world. “We started shooting in the Kalinago community and we will be ending in Pointe Michel,” he said.

UWI launches 2012 online programme

The University of the West Indies Open Campus in Dominica has officially launched its 2012 online programmes. The 62 year old university held a media day on Wednesday to introduce its Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Development and Family Studies. Head of the Campus Dr. Francis Severin says the new online programme will develop the required skills and knowledge for a range of careers that involve working with children, their families and the services that support them within social, health and education.
