Geothermal activity in Dominica The European Investment Bank has agreed to provide a $1.1 million grant to enhance planning and study the feasibility of exporting geothermal electricity from Dominica to Martinique and Guadeloupe. The bank, which is the European Union’s long-term lending institution, will look at possible links from Dominica to Guadeloupe to the north and from Dominica to Martinique in the south. “Ensuring the most effective use of geothermal energy as a sustainable source of electricity generation offers immense potential for transforming energy use and economic growth in the Caribbean,” said Plutarchos Sakellaris, European Investment Bank Vice President. I was inspired to write this article in memory of my grandmother after a phone conversation with a close friend in Virginia who happens to share the same family bloodline as me. We both started reminiscing about growing up in our community in the late 60’s early 70s’. Today, our society has changed as we witness an entire generation of the elderly population we grew-up with slowly disappearing to illnesses and old age.

Blackmoore Dominica has given Nevis assurances that Roseau does not intend competing with it in the area of geothermal energy. That assurance from Minister of Public Works, Energy and Ports Rayburn Blackmoore during a recent visit to Nevis. Expressing gratitude to the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) for the opportunity to share in its geothermal development experiences, the minister told the Department of Information there that he held the view that both islands should dialogue with each other given the fact that they were both pursuing the development of geothermal energy. The Dominican Minister during last weekend’s visit held talks with the minister for natural resources and the environment in Nevis, Carlisle Powell.
