Brian ‘Rocket’ Rock releases first solo CD; speaks of musical journey

Rocket speaks of his new CD and his musical journey during an interview with DNO He’s is the singer who helped uplift Swinging Stars’ music when he became the band’s vocalist at 16, the Wooden Stools musician who would have made it into the original Exile One line-up but missed out because his mom thought he was too young to be based in Guadeloupe at the time. He’s been doing his thing with a Chicago-based band for years now, but has just released his first solo CD – Hang in There. “No matter how things are rough, hang in there,” is the message he’s sending through the title track

Film brings the supernatural home

Dominica is no stranger to talk of the supernatural and so this Friday’s showing of The Skin is coming close to home. Howard and Mitzi Allen of HAMAFilms Antigua and the duo behind the supernatural thriller The Skin are the guests of the Dominica Film Commission and the Discover Dominica Authority as part of DOMFESTA. The film was shown at the Arawak Cultural Centre in Dominica yesterday. Film Commissioner Anita Bully said she’s followed the career of the couple since their first film, The Sweetest Mango, and was pleased they accepted the invitation to be a part of the annual festivities to celebrate Dominica.

Grammacks – Paka Lager!

Grammacks, with new lead singer, Linford John(extreme right) “The original members of Gramacks never really stopped playing music per se. We were not playing together as a band, but since the band broke up, we all continued playing individually.” A quote from one Dominica’s biggest cadence bands of the seventies, Gramacks, who, along with the creators of cadence-lypso music, Exile One, can be credited with having significantly impacted the French Caribbean with that music. The band has released its second CD since it was revived in 2009. The group’s original front man, the late Jeff Jo, was not part of that revival and Linford John, former lead singer of the group “Billomen”, was enlisted to fill that position. “Because of modern technology, we were able to complete this CD without any of us being in the same room together, at any given time, during the entire recording process! That, we think, is quite remarkable!” Gramacks state in a press release

Shermain Valerie cops Mother’s Queen Show crown

Shermain Valerie Twenty-six-year old Shermain Valerie of St Joseph, a mother of “one beautiful little girl”, has been crowned the winner of the Mothers’ Queen Show held here on Friday night. Her other awards include Miss Photogenic, best in creative wear, and Miss Intelligence. Third runner up at the Krazy Kokonut-held show was Shernelle Cadette, second runner up was Tamika Larocque, and first runner up Karen Sexieus.
