Lennox Linton Judgement has been reserved in the appeals court matter of broadcaster Lennox Linton versus chartered accountant Kieron Pinard-Byrne. The OECS Supreme Court heard an entire day of legal arguments on Wednesday, before taking its decision to defer its judgement, a ruling the appeals court says will be delivered in due time. Linton’s lawyer, Guyanese-born Stephen Fraser told the court that the comments made by his client were “fair comments” especially since that matter has been a “hot topic in Dominica since 1991.” “Everything stated by Linton was factual and was as a result of extensive research, he was also responding to a written article published in the local newspaper (The Chronicle) penned by Pinard-Byrne,” Fraser stated. He argued that all the evidence points to “web of intrigue” by Pinard-Byrne who was the one responsible for attracting comments of allegations “of criminal wrongdoing.” “Our position is and still remains that the gentleman (Pinard-Byrne) always benefitted and we are not alleging criminal misconduct,” he said.

At the end of the 1960s and into the early 1970s there was a sudden emergence of new young bands in Dominica. They were experimenting with novel forms of vibrant music based on the French Antillean beat rather than the more Anglo Caribbean oriented calypso and early reggae that was coming out of Trinidad and Jamaica respectively. The beat that emerged was Cadance (or as it was written later, Kadans) and the market for this new form of Dominican music was greatest in the French Antilles. Bands such as Grammacks led by Jeff Joseph and Midnight Groovers led by Phillip ‘Chubby’ Mark responded to the demand with one creative hit after the other

Anti-Gaddafi fighters SIRTE (BNO NEWS) — The bodies of more than 250 people who are believed to have been supporters of ousted Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi have been found in Sirte, a local newspaper reported on Wednesday. The 267 bodies were found in recent days in the city of Sirte and its suburbs, according to the Quryna newspaper which cited Red Cross sources. It said most of the victims were people loyal to the regime of Gaddafi, who was captured and killed near Sirte last week. The sources told the newspaper that the bodies were counted and photographed by transitional authorities before they were buried in mass graves near Sirte.

Astaphan Attorney for the petitioners, Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan continued with submissions as the election petition matters involving Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and Education Minister Petter St Jean headed to a conclusion. Astaphan first responded to the submissions of the petitioners’ attorney Douglas Mendes and asserted that Mendes’ assumption that in the event that there is lack of evidence of French law, Dominican Law automatically applies is conceptually wrong. He stated that acknowledgement of citizenship (acquiescence as Mendes said it) has to be proven by French law and absence of evidence of that cannot mean that Dominican law automatically applies. Astaphan then stated that the court would have to decide what the allegations were, posing the questions, “What were the allegations?” He cited authorities that said the petitioners must prove specific acts of misconduct and that mere status [being French] does not provide enough proof of that

KIEV (Reuters) – A 77-year-old Ukrainian man won a jar full of sour cream for coming first in a dumpling eating contest and then promptly died, local media reported on Wednesday. Ivan Mendel ate 10 dumplings in half a minute to win first place and a one-liter jar of sour cream in the contest held in the town of Tokmak in the southeastern Zaporizhya region on September 18, Fakty I Kommentarii newspaper said. Shortly afterwards, Mendel became unwell and died, according to local news websites. Dumplings, called “vareniki” in the former Soviet republic, are a staple of Ukrainian cuisine and are often stuffed with a range of fillings from mushrooms to cherries.

However, a source close to the alleged victim said, “She is vehement that she never got paid off.” “Further, I know of a regional attorney who works with the officer who says that she swears not to have received money,” said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “I know that this officer is still harassed by police high command.
