DLP supporters at a rally Dominica’s 57 year old Labour Party (DLP) is patting itself on the back for the level of progress the country has achieved to date. “To a large extent, what Dominica is today it owes a lot to the work and existence of the Dominica Labour Party,” Public Relations Officer Philbert Aaron said in a statement on the eve of the party’s 57th anniversary. Dr Aaron is describing Thursday’s (May 24) anniversary of the founding of the DLP as a milestone not only for the party but also for the people of Dominica.

Labour Party supporters celebrating 'Red Day' The so-called “RED CLINIC” (RC) said to be conducted weekly by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has come in for some harsh criticism in one local publication. “It is a deliberate ploy to keep people mentally and psychologically poor,” someone calling himself/herself OBSERVER writes in a letter submitted to Monday’s edition of the Sun newspaper. According to OBSERVER, what is dished out at the Wednesday RED CLINIC is “money (dry cash), also upon request monies or cash of up to $2,000.00, sometimes $5,000.00 well packaged in envelopes and escorted to the source, by a special courier delivered to party and PM loyalists”.

Ian Douglas Taiwan’s contribution to Dominica prior to 2004 continues to be compared very unfavorably with the current contribution being made by mainland China over the past eight years. Tourism Minister Ian Douglas, speaking in his capacity as Portsmouth MP at the Dominica Labour Party’s (DLP) delegates conference at St Joseph on Sunday, suggested that Taiwan’s contribution to Dominica when Taipei had diplomatic relations with Roseau, was miniscule when compared to Chinese assistance. “Can we go back to Taiwan brothers and sisters?” Douglas asked party delegates at the conference. “I mean I don’t have any problem, I am not against a little pawpaw, and a little pineapple brothers and sisters, that them fellas (referring to the Taiwanese’s agricultural help to Dominica in the past) were planting,” Douglas observed.

Peter Wickham Regional Pollster Peter Wickham wants the Dominica government to use its parliamentary strength and the large chunk of political support it obtained from the electorate in the 2009 general election to change “outdated” laws, and work towards greater transparency. Wickham, the featured speaker at the delegates conference of the governing Dominica Labour Party, said the Party which received 61 per cent of the popular vote in the last election, should be able to deal with governance issues without having to look over its shoulder. He made reference to the troublesome dual citizenship issue that recently landed Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and his education minister Peter St Jean in court (the two won their case but the matter is being appealed at the level of the OECS Supreme Court). “I worry about the fact that in most instances we have not renewed our fundamental laws once or twice at best, if at all,” the pollster said. “I worry that we are afraid to delete from our constitutions a provision that would allow Dominicans holding dual citizenship to hold office,” Wickham, who has weighed in on that matter before and been criticised for it, described as a controversial issue.

Former Barbadian PM Owen Arthur Regional integration, the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME) and related matters will be on the agenda on Sunday (May 20) when the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) holds its delegates conference in the West Coast community of St Joseph in keeping with the DLP’s observance of its 57th Anniversary. Barbados’ current opposition leader, former prime minister Owen Arthur will be the featured speaker there, and is expected to focus on these regional matters that he championed during his tenure as a regional leader. However while the hundreds of delegates expected to converge on St Joseph from around the island will be happy to welcome the veteran Barbadian politician, they’ll probably be much more interested to hear Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit’s report on some of the major achievements of his administration over the past 12 months. Party officials have indicated that although there will be elections for a new executive, the status quo is largely expected to remain the same, with Prime Minister Skerrit maintaining his position of party leader, along with the majority of other officials serving the DLP at executive level

UWP politocal leader Edison James Former prime minister Edison James says his United Workers Party (UWP) is supportive of the move by governments of the sub-region to have a single economic space through economic union of the OECS (Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States). The UWP leader says economic union “is one further step where hopefully our smallness of size and our small numbers individually, can be to some extent negated by us cooperating as a larger body”. He expects the move to result in some increased economies of scale. James has also welcomed a planned OECS assembly where sub-regional matters including OECS economic union can be discussed by parliamentarians – government and opposition across the OECS.
