The Sports Division in collaboration with the National Bank of Dominica Ltd (NBD) will be commencing the 2012 NBD Primary Schools under 13 Football District Championship from May 26th to 31st 2012. This year’s District Championship will feature 16 of the best teams across nine zones, and each team will undergo a period of training before the actual competition. Sports Coordinator, Trevor Shillingford, stated that there has been a significant increase in participation among the schools. “We continue to see the impact that this championship is having and thank NBD for their support,” he added. Executive Manager for Marketing at NBD, Suzanne Joseph – Piper commended the efforts of the Sports Division, as well as the players for all their hard work. “NBD continues to make youth development a priority, and have identified Sports as an ideal medium through which positive values can be instilled in our young people. Activities like the Under 13 football championship serve as a training ground for future football starts!” Earlier this year, NBD donated over $12,000 to the Sports Division towards the staging of the Primary School under 13 championship. This marked the Bank’s third year of partnership with the Sports Division. Approximately 50 schools participated in the first leg of the competition, which closed in March.

Chanderpaul on top of things on the 1st day of the 1st test on Thursday. Photo by WICB LONDON – Adrian Barath said West Indies batsmen had shown great determination in their battle against England’s “pumped-up” bowlers in challenging conditions in the first Test on Thursday. The Windies opener said it was disappointing to lose nine wickets on the opening day at Lord’s, but the visitors had fought gallantly while the sky remained overcast for most of the day and England’s bowlers, led by Stuart Broad, also exploited a helpful pitch. “I think we played well [in the circumstances],” said Barath

Dame Mary Eugenia Charles An exemplary leader – that’s how the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) is remembering former Prime Minister Dame Mary Eugenia Charles on what would have been her 93 birthday on Tuesday (today) May 15. Historian Lennox Honychurch describes the woman who was born in the village of Pointe Michel on May 15 in 1919 as having had a distinguished career as Prime Minister of Dominica, lawyer, politician and occasional journalist. For the DFP, Dame Eugenia must be remembered “for her tremendous contribution towards Dominica’s development as well as that of the OECS and CARICOM”. The party recalls that internationally, she was recognized for her strong leadership and her stand for Democracy and Human Rights
