THATTA, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) — At least 23 people were killed on Sunday evening when a van collided head-on with a passenger bus on a highway in southern Pakistan, local media reported on Monday. The accident happened on the National Highway near the historic town of Thatta in Sindh province when a speeding passenger van was attempting to overpass a bus. While doing so, the vehicle collided head-on with another bus which was coming from the opposite direction. The strong impact killed 17 people who were in the van, which was heading towards Pakistan’s largest city of Karachi
TOKYO (BNO NEWS) — The government of Japan is planning to conduct stress tests on all of its nuclear reactors as safety concerns continue with the country’s ongoing nuclear crisis, officials said Wednesday. Japanese Minister of Trade, Economy, and Industry Banri Kaieda said the nationwide stress tests would assess the country’s nuclear safety, as many of Japan’s operation of reactors are currently suspended until regular checkups are completed, Kyodo news agency reported. Despite two reactors at the Genkai plant, which is located in the country’s Saga Prefecture, initially expected to reactivate its operations, Saga Governor Yasushi Furukawa underlined that it would be appropriate to wait for the test results before the government decides whether to restart the reactors.
TEHRAN (BNO NEWS) — Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday summoned the Bahraini charge d’affaires in Tehran for allegedly imposing “illegal restrictions” on Iranian nationals residing in Bahrain, the state-run Press TV reported. The Foreign Ministry conveyed Tehran’s dissatisfaction with the Manama government’s treatment of Iranian nationals, describing it as a violation of international conventions. Tehran also called on the Bahraini authorities to respect the rights of Iranian nationals residing in the Persian Gulf kingdom. The Iranian Foreign Ministry had previously summoned Manama’s envoy to Tehran in May over a Bahraini court’s decision to sentence an Iranian national to death
JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) — Dozens of laid off workers from a food packing company rallied inside the building of Indonesia’s House of Representatives in Jakarta on Wednesday, local media reported. Last April, around 300 workers were laid off by PT Glopac Indonesia for starting and joining a labor union, the Antara news agency reported, adding that the company did not make a severance pay to the workers. According to Indonesian Labor Union Movement spokesman Ismail Sukandi, PT Glopac Indonesia had also filed a Rp 7.3 billion ($854,000) lawsuit against a movement for setting up the labor union. Workers decided to gather and stage the rally at the parliament building to clarify their situation, as they have not received an answer from the company or the District of Bekasi in West Java, where the company is located.
CAIRO, EGYPT (BNO NEWS) — Thirteen Egyptian political parties have formed the National Coalition for Egypt to run in the upcoming September parliamentary elections, the Ahram newspaper reported on Wednesday. The new coalition was launched at a ceremony at the headquarters of the Wafd Party. It was created in order to establish a parliament that represents all political factions and for the creation of a unity government. The member parties include the Muslim Brotherhood’s new wing Freedom and Justice Party, the Wafd, El Ghad, El Adl, El Tagammu, El Nasserist, El Amal, El Wasat, El Nour, El Karama, El Tawheed El Araby and Masr El Horreya.
