Carib Chief Has Accused Gov’t of Eroding an Act Governing the Indigenous People

Carib Chief Garnet Joseph is accusing the Roosevelt Skerrit led administration of eroding laws governing the indigenous people. There is still a tug of war over who should receive the keys of 41 newly constructed houses in the Carib Territory. Both the Carib Affairs Ministry and the Carib Council are claiming rights to receiving the keys.

And while the debate continues, Joseph is charging that the laws governing the Indigenous people gives rights to the Carib Council to settle any dispute regarding the lands of the Territory.

Joseph says he is still not convinced that the houses are not being handed over because of their incompletion.

The Carib affairs Minister Ashton Graneau had said that government will hand over the 41 newly constructed houses to the Carib people in due time.

Graneau said however the keys are expected to be handed over to the Ministry of Carib affairs and not the Carib Council.

He believed that the Carib council had misinterpreted its mandate.

Graneau also indicated that there is still work to be on the houses before the keys can be handed over to his ministry
