Even though no direct hit was received from hurricane Omar, Dominica’s coastlines got a rigorous beating with swollen sea waves linked with this storm. In several parts of the island high seas hit coastlines harming valued property and infrastructure. Damage was also done to the boats of several fishermen – for some of them their only source of revenue.

The villages of Soufriere and Scotts Head were completely cut off from the rest of the country since heavy sea swells made it unachievable for persons to pass. A number of houses located close to the sea were flooded along with businesses such as the Anchorage Hotel. Damage was also done to the Ferry Terminal and the Cruise ship berth located on the Bay front. At the Canefield Airport standard flights were on halt with the airport only open to urgent situations.

No area on Dominica’s west coast was secure from the havoc of Thursday’s heavy seas. And According to officials at DOMLEC Electricity restoration is in the works but some consumers in certain villages will have to bare with the outage just a bit longer. Meantime, Prime Minister of Dominica sees the extent of damage done and says that Government would be doing all it can to assist those affected.
