ROSEAU, Dominica –The poor Caribbean island of Dominica says it will receive $21 million from Venezuela under a leftist Latin American trade group initiative before the end of the week.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says the aid from Caracas and the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas, or ALBA, will be earmarked for various development projects, without providing specifics. Political opponents have criticized Skerrit’s administration in the eastern Caribbean island for becoming a member of the regional trade alliance. Members of the ALBA group include Cuba, Bolivia and Nicaragua.
Skerrit told reporters Wednesday that the aid is “testament to the strong bonds of friendship between Dominica and Venezuela within the ALBA.”
