Domlec Attempts to Address Consumer’s Concerns Over High Electricity Bills

By Lakisha La Bassiere – Q95fm News.

After very strong criticism and threats of demonstration from being the general public, DOMLEC officials took time out to address and clarify some of the issues causing the rise in cost of electricity in Dominica.

Managing Director, Joel Huggins and Chief Engineer, Rawlins Bruney, expressed their concerns from their perspective as electricity producers and distributors and also as consumers of electricity in their daily lives. They explained that the main reason for the exorbitant increases in consumer’s electricity bills was primarily due to the rise in the world price of oil, and that high fuel prices are affecting not only Dominica but other countries in the rest of the world as well.

Mr. Joel Huggins stated that certain initiatives had in fact been put in place in an attempt to lower the electricity bills of consumers. He also confirmed that the Petro Caribe initiative was not in fact meant to deliver cheaper fuel to Domlec – but the Petro Caribe deal benefited the consumers and not DOMLEC.

Meantime, DOMLEC Commercial Manager, Mr. Nathaniel George, took the opportunity to explain the billing system being used by DOMLEC.
