Scientists monitoring the Morne aux Diables (Devil’s Peak) volcano in the northern part of Dominica, have warned of a possible collapse that could be triggered by a major earthquake. This, they say, could trigger a tsunami that would put the neighbouring French island of Guadeloupe at risk.
The time span for that occurrence could be in the next hundred years, or next week.
The research team says up to 30,000 residents and tourists along the coast of Guadeloupe would have almost no time to seek higher ground.
Cecil Shillingford is a former disaster preparedness coordinator in Dominica. He said he fears that any earthquake, however small, could trigger the collapse and affect the stability of the North and North Western communities of the island.
