DPSU members at meeting The Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), has given the government seven days to reply to two resolutions which were passed at a meeting of public officers on Monday “or face protest action”. A large number of public officers gathered at the Public Service Union headquarters on Valley Road where they passed two resolutions dealing with salary negotiations for 2009-2012, and productivity in the public service. The public officers are angry at a statement made by government’s productivity consultant, Parry Bellot, that 80% of the public sector is “unproductive.” Former president of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) Mervin Anthony addressed the gathering and called on public officers to “speak out”, “be brave…and not afraid and get ready for action.” “Once again public officers are under attack by those who sit in big chairs in those two big buildings, getting big salaries and doing no work and so, public officers are becoming the scapegoat. We are here to tell Parry (Bellot) and all the others that we will not stand for that disrespect,” Anthony exclaimed to loud applause.

St. Lucia Foriegn Minister Alva Baptiste Reacting to entrepreneurs’ complaints that the influx of Chinese businesses was posing a threat to their survival, St Lucia’s foreign minister Alva Baptiste said on Monday that his government would help local entrepreneurs become more competitive rather than give them protection. “Rather than seek to be protective this new Labour administration will seek to make businesses more competitive, as we need to pursue a policy that will ensure that we do not disturb the delicate balance that currently exists,” the minister said.

Shillingford Leeward Islands Cricket Association (LICA) President Gregory Shillingford has been clearing the air about his alleged involvement in the decision to move the third Test in the pending Digicel Home Series between West Indies and Australia from Guyana to Dominica. Antigua-based Shillingford told the Daily Observer newspaper in St John’s that the decision was not one he could have influenced. According to the Observer, his statement comes following calls from former national players, Zorol Barthley and Kenneth Benjamin, for Shillingford to demit office – they have accused him of not having the best interest of Leeward Islands cricket at heart. The former players argued that Shillingford should have ensured that the match, scheduled for April 23 to 27, was given to Antigua.

Charles, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Dominica to the OAS speaking at the cernemony Monday Dominica can expect to be more equipped to trace firearms in the country, through its participation in an Organisation of American States (OAS) programme. The OAS said in a release that it is about to execute its program “Promoting Firearms Marking in Latin America and the Caribbean” in Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Panama and Peru. OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza stated that with the signing of this agreement “the countries will not only acquire the technical capacity to develop specific actions to prevent and combat illegal arms trafficking but will also show their willingness and commitment to address the challenges of criminal activity for the security and welfare of citizens.” Dominica is happy to be part of that arrangement, according to the country’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Hubert J

Agricultural officials here say Dominica is positioning itself to make maximum use of funds being made available to ten banana-exporting nations by the European Union. The European Commission’s BAM (Banana Accompanying Measures) programme’s funding of 190 million Euros is intended to provide additional development assistance to help the countries involved adjust to new market conditions, following the erosion of the preferential market access that was previously enjoyed by the Africa Caribbean Pacific (ACP) group of countries in Europe. Dominica expects to receive during 2012 and 2013, between 14 and 15.5 million Euros from the programme. Director of Agriculture Ricky Brumant says under the BAM arrangement, Dominica will seek to make its banana production and exports more competitive, while focusing on other areas of agriculture as well.
