Former Minister for Tourism Hon. Norris Prevost is expressing great disappointment in the inadequacy of meaningful accomplishments of the Labour government over the past nine years. He says under the current Labour Regime, Dominicans have witnessed a complete collapse of the economy, an increase in the unemployment rate, and a society left with no hope or trust in its current leaders.
Mr. Prevost says, if and when the Melville Hall airport is completed it will remain a disadvantage to the country since it will not be able to accommodate big aircrafts and persons will still experience the inconvenience of having to overnight at various territories on the way to Dominica, and they may still not being able to see their luggage when they arrive.

Yow when writing the news, put a little photo of the current state of the airport for ppl who have not visited in a while to know you talking about nuh? I might get to see this expension project till next year. I would have believed that a runway extension would not take more than 5 years to complete. Say what you want but I believe personally that the amount of money that is being poured into this project could have brought us at least halfway on an international airport.
What do you all people really want? What is the purpose of an international airport? Is’nt an international airport for year round travelling and business? Who or what is going to pay for the year round operations of the airport or are we just going to depend on the occasional tourist and nationals who come home for carinival and independence?
Come on my people stop playing politics. Politicians come and go but Dominca will always remain our homeland. Take a good look around
and examine your conscience and tell me honestly if Dominica really needs an INT’L Airport.
Man, are you mad, YES Dominica does need a International aiport, and what do you mean who is coming and going.. come on, if it had an international airport, there would be so much more visitors or are you just afraid of the visitors. That is crazy, for years this country has been so backwards and still is, let the country move forward.. look at all the other islands around dominica, they all have Intl airports, and for decades Dominica still has two crapy airports.
Yes the country is a tropical island, and it’s beautiful, who wouldn’t want to come here.. the crazy connecting flights that always get your baggages lost, needs to stop, put the Intl airport in, and let Dominica make a difference, Dominica needs that push forward.
The powers that be need to inform the citizenry of the fact that while the airport is being upgraded, it will in no way increase airlift or facilitate night operations. The latter being the critical issue as it relates to travellers having to overnight in other territories.
All of the “grant” money is being spent to achieve a standard that should have been attained a long time ago to enable the airport to actually operate. The very nature of the area in which the airport is located does not allow for optimal expansion.
Open you eyes Dominicans, the airport may become more compliant with certain standards, but it will never fulfil the purpose of bringing travellers to our shores without the hassle of connecting elsewhere or even getting stranded without luggage.
Furthermore, the airlines will NOT fly into this inherently dangerous airport after the sun has set.
PLEASE MY PEOPLE , GET REAL.
Dear Mr Dominican PM,
When are we Dominicans ever going 2 see our beautiful island with an international airport? Starting with the Melvill Hall airport Shit! what is the point of waisting so much money on night landing and extending the runway 4 what??? Stop and think about it wouldn’t it have made more sence to plan and creat a state of the art international airport at Woodford Hill? As a Prime minister who has 3 portfolio in the cabinate dont you know how much money Dominica is losing compare to the rest of the islands who are gaining and flying well ahead of dominica islands such as Antigue, St Lucia and Barbadoes! Do you know how much money LIAT is making? Its about time Dominica runs LIAT away into their cave! THats where LIAT belongs out of business!!!!!
Look at the design of Guadeloupe Airport via http://www.google.com its such a beauty! Dominica needs one better that theirs. wouldn’t you agree???
I love my parents country i recently visited Dominica for the FET 2008. That was suppose to be the biggest but Dammmmm that was a waist of time! The other island people who travelled to Dominica just went back to their country laughing at Dominica to see the state of the island! Flying via LIAT some people didnt get their suitcase after two weeks arriving on the island now what is that shit about!!!!
Hotels is another thing Dominica needs more of and far better ones. When you look at islands such as Barbadoes, Jamaica, St Lucia. We need to be ahead of these islands so we could shut their mouths!!!!! Dominica also needs to be brighten up especially during the night because right now it looks like a ghost island. Roads is another thing we need especially high way roads.
They won’t do it, the CRAPPPPPPPPYYYYY government is holding back the country, this is such BS!!! serious, it definitely is a shame!!! a BIG one, i think i know what is happening, they are just running away all the possibilities for the country and giving it to the other country around Dominica, definitely a BIG shame!!
I love Dominica, it’s my parents country, my family’s and my fiance’s country. I’m american I wish I was full dominican, but I am full at heart, I’m strongly involved with my culture, but I tell you when I came to find out about this freaking expansion project I was outraged. Why? Becuase Dominica was given enough freakin money, enough!!! Enough money to build new airport alone, there’s no excuse. Then to call it an international airport thats nonsense. All them nice airports in the caribbean like St.Maarten, Antigua, Jamaica, etc.. Dominica Come on!!! We’re the freakin Nature Island make the place more attractive for tourists help try to compete with the other islands ecomony. Create villas, apartments, hotels, etc. Put some of these people to work these young people have nothing to do, give them things to do. I wish I was very wealthy..becuase I would bring alot to Dominica. The government already waste money on Mellville Hall Airport lets focus on rebuliding Canefield Airport into a new attracting, efficent, international airport, let’s make it the new Canefield International Airport. It’s time we turn this country around..
Surprising comments to a major issue indeed.
Apart of the pure political side of some comments, it is surprising to read that most people blame the quality of service of a certain airline …… to justify for an “international airport” !
Melville hall is an international airport . Large transatlantic or transamerican airliners cannot indeed land there, but how can you say that once there is an airport… airliners will come ?
Who will pay for the flights ?
Today’s airline world is based on the “hub” concept. Direct flights between major hubs, and then connecting flights to smaller airports.
Most of the flights to the islands where they cannot be full all the time (Grenada, St Kitts, St Lucia…) are subsidized by local governments, and this cost a fortune .
Melville Hall improvement will definitely help.
To me the best solution by far is to start once for all a decent “Air DOminica” local airline linking Melville Hall and Canefield airports to the major Caribbean hubs .
Showing Dominica’s flag on aircrafts, giving interesting jobs to the youth of Dominica and of the Diaspora .
And this would cost less than 1 percent of the required investment and less than one tenth of the cost to operate an “international airport” which would be empty most of the time .
There are many Dominicans perfectly capable of running such an airline and willing to do so.
This is only my personal opinion.
