The China-funded Windsor Park Stadium The following was published in the Loyola Phoenix by Hannah Helbert and is reproduced here for the benefit of DNO readers: Growing influence of China easy to see half a world away in Caribbean Walking into the post office in Roseau, Dominica, I saw the usual scenes of bureaucracy I would expect anywhere around the world: drab plastic countertops, marquee ropes controlling lines and less-than-enthused employees weighing packages and filing paperwork. What I didn’t expect to see was a 2010 “Scenery of the Great Wall” calendar. This calendar was displayed prominently on the back wall of the office. My visit to the Commonwealth of Dominica (not to be confused with its Caribbean island neighbor, the Dominican Republic) coincided with the Chinese Lunar New Year.

DPSU members at meeting The Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), has given the government seven days to reply to two resolutions which were passed at a meeting of public officers on Monday “or face protest action”. A large number of public officers gathered at the Public Service Union headquarters on Valley Road where they passed two resolutions dealing with salary negotiations for 2009-2012, and productivity in the public service. The public officers are angry at a statement made by government’s productivity consultant, Parry Bellot, that 80% of the public sector is “unproductive.” Former president of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) Mervin Anthony addressed the gathering and called on public officers to “speak out”, “be brave…and not afraid and get ready for action.” “Once again public officers are under attack by those who sit in big chairs in those two big buildings, getting big salaries and doing no work and so, public officers are becoming the scapegoat. We are here to tell Parry (Bellot) and all the others that we will not stand for that disrespect,” Anthony exclaimed to loud applause.
