The judicial system has its shortcomings – DPP

The DPP has pointed to inefficiencies he says that include the absence of a proper bail act, a new jurors’ act, and a new evidence act. However Pestaina says it is difficult to single out “which area I find would contribute to a lack of faith in the justice system, it’s a combination of many many matters”. He was responding to ongoing suggestions online and on the country’s talk shows questioning the impartiality of the courts, especially on matters of a political nature

Cuban literacy method benefits almost six million people around the world

Almost six million people in 28 countries all over the world have learned to read and write thanks to the Cuban literacy method ‘Yo si puedo’ (Yes, I Can). According to Enia Rosa Torres, an advisor to the Cuban Minister of Education, 5.8 million people have already learned to read and write using the ‘Yo si puedo’ method, while 723,900 others have benefited from a similar Cuban methodology called ‘Yo si puedo seguir’ (Yes, I Can Continue), which guarantees elementary instruction. Dominican students begin term of Marine Life Studies

A student peers at Plankton during the program This week fifth grade students from across Dominica begin a semester-long exploration of local marine life through the educational programme known as Floating Classrooms. A special live broadcast of the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Sports radio program Youth Vibes will take place from beneath the sea at the Soufriere-Scotts Head Marine Reserve kicks off this years Floating Classroom programme. Floating Classrooms — a collaboration between the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), the Caribbean Whale Watch Operators Association (CARIBwhale Inc), the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, Dominica’s Sea Turtle Conservation Organization (DomSetCo) and the Youth Development Division of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports — teaches students about the importance of protecting marine life near Dominica and around the world, ultimately inspiring the next generation of ocean stewards. Students are introduced to Dominica’s whales, sea turtles and more, through classroom activities and face-to-face encounters as marine scientists for a day

Green calls for public support to see appeal through

In a 49-page judgement delivered on January 10, High Court Judge Gertel Thom dismissed the election petition  against Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and La Plaine representative Peter St Jean – the education minister. Two of four in alleged Soufriere drug bust granted bail

Flynn (left), Cochrane Two of four locals who had been remanded in connection with a drug bust in Soufriere recently have been granted bail. Yohan Flynn of Bath Road and Craig Cochrane of Kingshill were released on a $50,000 bail bond each when they appeared before Magistrate Ossie Lewis Monday morning. The men were jointly charged with Gerald Germain of Bath Estate, John Sylvester of Lagoon Portsmouth, and Irwin Miller of St Vincent  for allegedly importing 10,000 grams (10 kilos) or 22 pounds of cured marijuana on January 6.
