Crispin Gregoire Former Ambassador/Permanent representative of Dominica at the United Nation Crispin Gregoire has been appointed United Nation Development Program’s (UNDP) Chief of the Caribbean Strategic Monitoring and Support Unit of the Regional Bureau of Latin America and the Caribbean. The announcement was made on Tuesday via email by Heraldo Munoz UNDP’s Regional Director for the Regional Bureau of Latin America and the Caribbean. The email was circulated to all staff of the Bureau of Latin America and the Caribbean, which includes all of the country offices and the Panama Regional Center.
Forty-eight teachers and education officers who gave long and dedicated service in the education sector will be honoured at the Retirees Awards Dinner of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development on Saturday. The awards ceremony is intended to pay tribute to the distinguished group of educators who contributed significantly to Dominica’s development as employees of the Ministry of Education. The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development is proud to acknowledge the accomplishments and service of the awardees as they move on to a new stage in their lives and wishes them well for their retirement. EC$10 with braille feature In an effort to provide EC Notes which are easier for blind and visually impaired persons to use, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) has issued a series of notes with braille features. Braille is a universal system of writing and printing which enables blind or visually impaired persons to read and write through touch. It consists of a pattern of raised dots which are arranged on special paper and represent letters, numbers and characters. The braille characters on the upgraded EC Notes feature a cricket theme in the form of balls and stumps. These characters have been added to the 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar bills.
Ron Green He has admitted that his political future hangs in the balance, pending the results of an appeal against the high court ruling that favored Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and Education Minister Peter St Jean. Former United Workers Party (UWP) leader Ron Green has indicated that his future actions will depend on what decision comes out of the appeals process. The former parliamentary representative for the La Plaine constituency, who has been in active politics for several years, says it is likely that he will end his political career if the appeal court does not rule in his favor. Lawyers for Green and another UWP election candidate Maynard Joseph have gone ahead and filed their appeal in the dual citizenship case against PM Skerrit and St Jean.
The National Drug Abuse Prevention Unit continues its effort in the area of Drug Demand Reduction, after a successful Drug Awareness Month in January 2012 under the theme “MY COMMUNITY, MY CHOICE: NO DRUGS”. Currently the unit is conducting its third Drug Education and Intervention Program at the Dominica State prison for twenty inmates. The program will run from April 11- 18 July 2012. The program seeks to: (1) reduce the supply and demand for drugs in prison, (2) help inmates modify their behaviour to remain drug free after their release and (3) teach inmates life skills for positive decision making
