UWP suppports OECS single economic space

UWP politocal leader Edison James Former prime minister Edison James says his United Workers Party (UWP) is supportive of the move by governments of the sub-region to have a single economic space through economic union of the OECS (Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States). The UWP leader says economic union “is one further step where hopefully our smallness of size and our small numbers individually, can be to some extent negated by us cooperating as a larger body”. He expects the move to result in some increased economies of scale. James has also welcomed a planned OECS assembly where sub-regional matters including OECS economic union can be discussed by parliamentarians – government and opposition across the OECS.

Men’s group to address traditional values

The group of men here known as CARIMAN says it is embarking on a series of projects, including one that’ll focus on the family structure. It says the plan of activities was developed at a recent one-day symposium on violence. “The intention is to address the traditional values. We intend to work with families, Ministry of Education and the community in collaboration with the Dominica Planned Parenthood Association

PM congratulates new Bahamas leader

Perry Christie Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has congratulated the Progressive Liberal Party of Bahamas on its election victory. On Monday opposition leader Perry Christie and his PLP party secured a commanding majority of the 38 seats in the house of assembly which will allow it to form a new government. He served as prime minister from 2002 to 2007.

Charles Maynard will be remembered for his sterling contribution – DFP

The late Ambassador, His Excellency Charles Maynard served in the Public and Private Sectors and became a Permanent Secretary at a very youthful age. He also held a number of managerial positions in the Private Sector. He was a member of the Committee for National Salvation in 1979 and was appointed Senator and Minister of Education and Health in he Interim Government

However historian Dr Lennox Honychurch also remembers “Mike” as a complex, multi-faceted politician, very much aware of his constituents in relation to the national picture. “He knew he had a strong political base and could afford to be outspoken,” Honychurch recalled of the former Portsmouth MP.
