PM Skerrit Educational help for Dominican students from the Chinese government has been evenly spread around the country, according to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. He told a prize giving ceremony of winners of the essay competition “China in my Eyes” on Thursday night that almost every village in Dominica has or has had one student studying in China. “In looking at the students who have been to China, and those who are presently students there, and those who will be going there in September, we recognize that almost every if not every village in Dominica has had the opportunity to have at least one student studying in China,” the prime minister said.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit promised recently that Cabinet would examine the issue of whether the government should disclose fully, the memorandum of understanding (MOU) that Dominica signed with China when the two countries entered into diplomatic relations in 2004. PM Skerrit appears to have since taken no action on the matter, explaining recently that the government was busy doing its work when reminded about his promise on the MOU. Many bloggers on Dominica News Online have at one time or another called for full disclosure of the MOU. Others contend that agreements with other countries have not been the subject of public scrutiny, and the Dominica/China agreement should also fall into that category
Charles Maynard Dominica News Online has received information that Charles Maynard has died. Information indicated he passed on at about 2:00 am on Tuesday at the Princess Margaret Hospital. He was Dominica’s ambassador to the OECS and special advisor to Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit at the time of his passing. More on this story later.
Next Monday’s “Hike with the Clergy” event will have a few high profile figures hitting the Penville to Capuchin leg of the Waitukubuli National Trail. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, Bishop of Roseau Gabriel Malzaire and Tourism Minister Ian Douglas are expected to be among hikers to be found on what’s known as Segment 13 of the trail on May 7. Organisers say the activity will be held primarily to raise funds for a major conference of the diocesan priests of the province of Castries to be held in Dominica in January 2013.
PM Skerrit Continuing attacks on tourists and foreigners especially in the Calibishie area have prompted the Dominica government to announce that it will be appointing 20 special constables in an effort to upgrade security in the tourism industry. These constables will be expected to patrol beaches and other public areas frequented by visitors to Dominica. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit made that announcement at the 2012 Tourism Industry Awards Ceremony on Monday night. He indicated that the move was part of a larger plan to fight crime on the island
