Dominica News Online is receiving information that schoolchildren and teachers at Newtown Primary School are feeling the ill effects of oil seepage from a garage behind the Fatima Church. In an email to DNO a concerned citizen said one teacher has complained that her class has been experiencing headaches and feeling quite nauseous because of the constant smell of oil in the air. When the management at the garage was confronted on this matter the response was, “That’s all Dominicans are good for, talk and write”.

Presentation by DSDASS The Dominica Seventh-day Adventist Secondary School (DSDASS) has topped a competition set up by the Dental Health Services Department. Fifth-form Food and Nutrition students from six schools from around the island submitted presentations for judging and DSDASS finished first ahead of Pierre Charles Secondary School in second place and North Eastern Comprehensive School in third. Principal of the DSDASS, Carlotta Challenger, spoke to DNO about the competition, which was aimed at promoting dental health through healthy eating. Sanford Claudius Sanford is among six Eastern Caribbean citizens that have been successful in their bid for a place in the competitive U.S. Fulbright Fellowship programs. These scholarships will enable them to pursue graduate level education in the United States starting this year. Sanford is the Deputy Leader of the United Worker Party in Dominica, a member of the Eastern Caribbean’s indigenous Kalinago people, and a teacher at Dominica State College. He has been granted a Fulbright Faculty Development Scholarship, enabling him to study at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He will be pursuing a Master’s degree in Economic Policy.
Entrance to Portsmouth Secondary School What began as a normal school day at the Portsmouth Secondary School this morning turned into chaos when students began screaming and running aimlessly around. Some of the student tried to get a glance of the action while others, in fear, just wanted to be out of the school’s compound. It is alleged that three female students each from the second, third and fourth form started ‘acting up’ by turning over desks, fighting with teachers and turning their classes into rooms of confusion.
