ROSEAU, Dominica(AP) — The tiny Caribbean island of Dominica says Venezuela will build a new power plant that could help reduce high energy costs.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says the island’s only power plant is inefficient and has led to a rise in power bills. Skerrit’s announcement comes as residents threaten to protest power bills that average about $144 a month.
Energy Minister Charles Savarin said Wednesday that he does not know how much the new plant will cost nor when construction will begin. Skerrit said a team of Venezuelan engineers recently visited the island to identify a site for the plant.
Dominica recently announced that Venezuela also plans to send $21 million in aid under a leftist Latin American trade pact.
