Wish List For 2008 World Creole Music Festival

2008 world creole music festival wish list

You can hear the singing. Under my umbrella, ella, eh, eh, eh. You can hear the shouting, Rihanna! Rihanna! Rihanna! You can hear every one of them crooning. You remind me of a girl that I once knew. You can hear them screaming from the top of their voices. I love you, Usher! Some cheers, some cry, some faint, some dream.

Some wish. But if wishes were lyrics Usher would be singing here at the end of October. Baby you are my only wish.

One is a Barbadian multi-platinum MTV, Grammy and American Music Award winning artist. Shut up and drive, drive, drive. The other is an American multiple Grammy, MT, World Music, American Music, Source, Billboard, and MTV Europe Music Award Winner and actor. You will always be my boo.

Rihanna and Usher are two of the very big names in contemporary music that organizers of the World Creole Music Festival (WCMF) have on their “wish list” for this year’s event.

“(we are looking at) some of the more popular names to today. We’re talking about Rihanna and Sean Paul, and from the United States, (artistes) like Akon and Ushers” said Ian Douglas, the minister of tourism who has responsibility for the Dominica Festivals Committee, the body charged with organizing the festival.

There is no doubt that Akon is a big name. You can hear the chorus: Smack that ‘till you get sore, smack that oh-oh. There’s no questioning Sean Paul’s pull as one of the most successful Jamaican crossover reggae artistes. You can hear the chanting: Shake that thing miss kana kana, And there will be the traditional crowd pleasures from over the years, like Kassav, Taboo Combo, and Carimi “because it’s Reunion Year,” the tourism minister told The Sun. “We have to strike a balance between the hype and the (tradition of ) the festival.”

But securing Rihanna and/or Usher would send the festival to the roof. As it stands now, it ‘s only the DFC’s dream list but the price has to be right,” added Douglas. Cost remains a major issue for the organizers who are working on a limited budget. Douglas made it clear that profit was not the top priority. The primary purpose of the festival is to bring persons to Dominica and to market Dominica as a destination,” he said.

But it takes money to put together a successful event and at this point, he DFC has very little money.

“We’ve just received our first tranche of subvention of 100 thousand dollar from government,” Douglas revealed. The sponsors , Digicel , have also given EC$100,000, The Sun was told.
“We’ll use it for contract with the artistes …to send in as the deposit.” However EC$200,000 is a long way form the US$1.5 million the DFC says is needed for a successful event. And, this could place the organizers between the proverbial rock and hard place.

“If , for example,” the tourism minister told The Sun, ‘you are caught in a high in a high price situation between say, Kassav and Usher. Which one do you bring? A final selection is expected before the end of the month. In the meantime, can you hear them now? Come, come Mr. DJ song pon de replay.

I would be disappointed to travel from England to the WCMF in Dominica and not be entertained by the best of what Creole music has to offer from the region. I’m sure that the majority of people I know who will be making the journey for Reunion08 would also feel the same way.

The WCMF is not the place for these modern contemporary artistes - They arleady have their platform in the world of showbiz!!!
