INTERESTING STORY: A dog version of the anti-depressant Prozac has been approved for sale to British pet owners.

The one-a-day tablet, which tastes of beef, is said to help cure ‘canine compulsive disorder’ and ‘separation anxiety’ brought on by owners’ long absences during the day.

The drug, called Reconcile, is also designed to curb the compulsive pacing, chewing and dribbling which its makers claim is a result of depression brought on by their owners’ long absences.

The anti-depressant Prozac has been used to cure compulsive behaviour in humans, and works by increasing the brain’s levels of serotonin, a ‘happiness’ chemical.

Side effects of Reconcile can include lethargy, reduced appetite, vomiting, shaking, diarrhoea, restlessness, excessive barking, aggression and seizures in a small number of dogs.

Now they are pushing drugs onto dogs. What to happen to just taking your dog out for a nice walk once or twice a day or to a park instead. Both of you will benefit.

Prozac that tastes like BEEF? I mean…where do we draw the line with these large pharmaceutical companies?…Come on!!!

I am surprised it took the British so long to approve it. This has been used in the US and Canada for almost two decades now. You are correct though, the dog anxiety issue has much to do with exercise requirements and how appropriate a certain beed of dog is for an individual’s lifestyle. I can’t tell you how many people I know who have cattle dogs cooped up in tiny apartments while they are putting in their 10 hour days as doctors or lawyers. These people are bright enough to get through professional school, but can’t spend a weekend researching what kind of dog (if any) will fit into their life.
