fireworks display after creole in the park 2008

Oh Creole in the Park, my only compliant is that you were too short – we found ourselves wishing for another day of festivities the moment the headliners completed their final notes. Though it may have ended too soon for my liking – Creole in the Park did end with a wonderful bang of fireworks display.

The finale was kicked-off with performances by Breezees Pan Symphony, Waitukubuli Dance Company, Boozai band out of New Jersey, and Caribbean Vibes There was a short break from the action for the Maggi Cooking Challenge, where different restaurants from around Roseau presented their Creole dishes to the Maggi judges. The challenge was won by BIG MAMA’S Snackette.

Later, on the side stage was the long anticipate performance by the MFR Band, who did not disappoint their fans who came out. Following MFR performance, the attention to the crowd was reverted back to the main stage, where the Red Hot Flames brought down the crowd with tracks like De Harder Deh Come and Quad Ride. Finally, it was the Swinging Stars - Dominica’s #1 Party band who brought down the curtains on the 2008 Cable and Wireless Creole in the Park with an electrifying performance.

As I concluded our coverage of Creole in the Park 2008, I can honestly say that I enjoyed myself and it was so incredible to see many of my long-time friends back home. To all my fellow Dominicans in the diaspora, who were unable to make it back home - I hope our coverage of Creole in the Park 2008 helped in anyway. With that said, I encourage you to continue visiting Dominica-Weekly.com for more Reunion Independence Celebration coverage.

The third day of Creole in the Park was surprisingly nice, despite the heavy rain which carried slightly into the latter part of the evening. Unlike day one and day two – day three for us was probably the most laid back, partly because it was raining most of the afternoon. As far as bands we covered on day three, I’ve to admit we missed a couple acts we wanted to see due to the rain, so we decided to take it easy and just casually walk the grounds to see if there anything interesting going on.

Day three started with performance by the cultural group karifuna, Point Michel Cultural Group, Phase 5 Steel band, Free Joseph, and Nature Vibes -one of the upcoming Reggae bands in Dominica.
Next on the main stage was Soca artist ‘Ricky T’, who is taking the Caribbean by storm with his soca hit song ‘Pressure Bloom’. No rain was going to defer Dominicans from seeing Ricky T perform.

The seventh act on the main stage was ever-hot, ever-exciting TripleKay International, who despite the rain rocked the massive crowd with hits from their new album Colours and their growing catalogue of hits.

Day three was brought to an end by the Kings of Cadence Midnight Groovers, who captivated crowd with many hits from the pass. The large numbers of returning Dominicans were particularly fun of the Midnight Groovers, seeing that it was Cadence music they grew up listening too.

cable and wireless VIP booth at creole in the Park 2008

In my second day covering Cable and Wireless Creole in the Park, I had the opportunity to check out some of my favorite artists/calypsoians in action from the Cable and Wireless VIP Booth. Thanks to my boss, I got to hangout with the big-boys and have the VIP girls addressing my every need. Hmmm… I could definitely get used to this VIP treatment.

Day two started with performances by the Cool Steel Orchestra, La Sal Differwans (cultural group), and by one of Dominica’s young upcoming bands - Xcess Groove.

Next on the main stage was Reggae star Nelly Stharre, who in my opinion rocked the crowd with a number of her mega hits like Peace & love and Soul Country from her 2004 album, entitled ‘Soul County’.

The fifth act on the main stage was a joint collaboration between Clint, Nayee, and Lloydie; who captivated the crowd with hits from their personal albums and growing catalogue. After their awe-inspiring performance, I got a chance to meet-up with some of the guys at the Cable and Wireless booth. One of the questions that I asked the guys was around their performance in front a well diverse Dominican crowd. According to the guys - “we are just proud to be apart of CITP, and to be able to celebrate Dominica’s 30 years of independence together with the many Dominicans who returned home to celebrate the reunion”.

In the final performance of the day which was also on the main stage was the Reunion Calypso connection segment backed up by Dominica’s #1 party band- Swinging Stars, featured a star-studded lineup of calypsoians like the Duchess, Tarina, King Dice, Daddy Chess, Hunter, Observer, Karessah, Scrunter, Tokyo, Skakey, Rabbit, and Tranada.

If is one thing I’ve learn from day two of Creole in the Park 2008, that it’s much better watching the performances from the VIP booth, and I guess the free drinks/food helps too.

Stay tuned to find out what happens on day three.
