The Waitukubuli National Trail Management Unit with DIGICEL, KRAZY Tees and Loubiere Water is collaborating for a SUMMER FUN HIKE 2012. The hike is carded for Saturday, August 11, 2012, on Segment 5 of the Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT), from Pont Casse to Emerald Pool.

This joint partnership event will:
1) Provide a window for corporate partners to continue to give back to the Dominican society in a significant manner;
2) Strengthen partnership and cross‐sectoral collaboration for the continued promotion and marketing of the WNT, a growing flagship Tourism product in Dominica;
3) Promote and increase utilization of the WNT for recreation and healthy lifestyles;
4) Give participants the opportunity to contribute to a worthy cause through active participation;
5) Provide assistance to a small group of needy children within our Dominica Society.

The event targets the general public, hiking clubs, adventure clubs, youth groups, agencies, companies, community organizations, individuals and all others with interest. Registration costs only EC$40.00 and includes a branded t‐shirt, transportation and two (2) bottles of Loubiere Spring Water. Persons still has the chance to participate and register on site.

Digicel’s branded bus will leave the Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard (Roseau Bayfront) at 6:30 a.m. to Pont Case. The hike begins from Pont Case at 7:30 am.

We urge as many persons to support this worthy cause which also opens up the opportunity to explore and enjoy part of the Waitukubuli National Trail. All proceeds from the walk will go towards assisting twelve (12) or more underprivileged students from across Dominica selected with the assistance of the village councils and schools.

Hike Fest 2012

May is Tourism Awareness Month. As part of this celebration, the Dominica Hotel and Tourism Association (DHTA) is again putting on one of its biggest events of the year, Hike Fest!

This year we will be partnering with the Waitukubuli National Trail, Discover Dominica Authority and various other Hiking committees and Tourism Stakeholders, who will be playing an integral role in Hike Fest 2012. We will be utilizing three sections of the Waitikubuli National Trail and the hikes will take place on:

Hike 1. May 05th, 2012 – Waitukubuli National Trail Segment 5 (River Hike): – Pond Casse to Castle Bruce, ending at Castle Bruce playing field.

This trail nestled within the Morne Trois Pitons World Heritage Site, features the long standing contributions of our indigenous people, the struggles of a resilient people and the value of our forest and water resources.

  • Estimated Walking time (hrs): 6
  • Type of hike: Easy, family hike.
  • Areas of interest: Old road (Carib trace), Emerald Pool and Facility, Castle Bruce Swamp, Forest station & nursery, Neg Maron Headquarters, Savanne David, Castle Bruce Village, Jaco Cave, Morne Turner (Morn Neg Maron), Creole Gardens and Spanny Falls (optional)
Hike 2. May 19th, 2012 – Waitukubuli National Trail – Segment 10 and part of 11 (Cross Country Hike): Starting Colihaut Heights and ending in Picard.

While walking this trail, one can learn about our farmers, about our many trees and listen to the merry sound of our birds.

  • Areas of interest: Morne Diablotin, Secondary forest, Agricultural farming, Parrot habitat, Syndicate Nature Trail & Welcome Center (optional)
Hike 3. May 26th, 2012 – Beach Hike: – Eden by the Sea to Londonderry

Take the trail behind Eden Estate and enjoy the 3½ hour walk along the coast to Cabana Beach (Londonderry Bay). Along this “easy to moderate” route you’ll be amazed by spectacular scenery that you probably never knew existed on Dominica’s north-east coast.
  • Areas of interest: Go discover hidden sand beaches, quiet, cozy bays, fascinating rock formations that jut out into the sea. Take in the breathtaking, panoramic views of Marie Galante and the two islets: Mastle & Noble. Feel the exhilarating Atlantic breeze in your face and listen to the calming sound of the ocean.

  • EC$ 70 for 2 hikes
  • EC$90 for 3 hikes (DHTA Members)
  • EC$100 for 3 hikes (Non-DHTA Members)

The second hike at this year’s Hike Fest highlighted segment four of the Waitukubuli National Trail (in reverse) – a moderate hike idle for nature lovers.

The 11.7 km hike started at centre of Dominica in an area called Pond Casse (which means Broken Bridge in Creole), and ended at the Laudat recreational Centre.

On this segment of the Waitukubuli National Trail you will travel through the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and offers views of several mountains, encounters of natural attractions and reminds us of Dominica’s rugged nature and rich heritage.

Some of the Areas of Interest includes: View of Morn Micotrin, Morn Watt, Morn Jaune, Morn Nichols, Morn Anglais, Morne Trois Piton, and Sulphur Springs.

Nearby Attractions: Boiling Lake, Fresh Water Lake, Middleham Falls, Striking Hole, Chemain Letang Historic Trail, Trafalgar Falls, and Boeri Lake & Trail. Here are some images from along the trail…enjoy!
