Although we live five minutes away, we nevertheless suggest that people staying at more distant lodgings make the trip to the Pointe Baptiste region of Calibishie on Dominica’s beautiful northeast coast to dine at Red Rock Haven.

The restaurant in adjacent to Napier’s White Sand Beach with a bar and several tables under thatch umbrellas. The chef is outstanding. The prices are on the higher side but not overly expensive. Entrees are typically up to EC$60. You’ll find a menu that varies daily with wonderful gourmet choices including appetizers. The restaurant is open Tuesdays through Sundays for lunch and dinner. The proprietors Stacy and Gina and the bartender/waiter Nigel are friendly and helpful.

For a real treat, choose a moonlit night and stroll the beach to experience the view of white surf, cliffs, the lights on Marie-Gallant, clear water in the shallows and best of all the moonlight sparkling off the minerals in the black sand that lies in patches on the beach. But the food is great at any time.

Big Papa’s Restaurant & Sports Bar was a big disappointment. We went on a night the restaurant had advertised specials, but we found the menu limited because supposedly it was the regular chef’s night off. It was also the regular waiter’s night off, and the replacement knew nothing and could do less. They also had no fruit juices or sodas, only alcoholic drinks to offer. The food was not very good and the price was high.

They offer “free” Internet and we had our laptop with us. The Internet was free, but the wireless connection did not work, and they demanded $5 for “electricity” and to use a wired connection. The wait for the food was over an hour. And coffee at the end of dinner came in a tiny espresso cup, but was regular coffee. This place is only steps from two good restaurants, the Purple Turtle and the Blue Bay. We suggest you go to one of them instead.

My wife Ruth and I have just returned from Sunday brunch at the newly-opened River Rush and I just couldn’t wait to write this review. River Rush is an exclusive resort in Dominica’s Rainforest situated between two rivers. The resort is incomplete as of today (23Aug09) although both should be finished soon.

Meanwhile, until the cottages are finished the restaurant is only open for Sunday brunch, served from 10AM – 2PM. The cost is moderate: EC$50 per person (plus cash bar) for a very good-tasting brunch with copious quantities and very wide selections.

We had omelets, which were served with two pancakes, home fries, sausages and bacon and a star fruit and parsley garnish. And (Ready for this homesick Americans?) Thomas’ English muffins! It was more than Ruth could finish.

River Rush is a lovely setting, at Duex Branche, along the road between Marigot and the Pond Casse roundabout, just west of the Central Forest Reserve. It’s well marked with a sign. River bathing there is an extra treat. A nice gravel path and stone steps lead from the restaurant to the river.

Pathway to Cottages

For me an extra-special treat was being allowed to jam with the live musicians, Mo the proprietor on sax and a keyboard player. I play harmonica. The music, whether you join-in like I did or simply listen as most everyone else does, is jazz and very, very good. Photos via river-rush.com
