Purely Dominica

Dominica carnival revelers

Once upon a time carnival in Dominica was dominated by upbeat/catchy calypso music, but in recent times, there has been pervasive growth of Bouyon music.

Now many of the carnival stakeholders, fear that in years to come, Dominica’s carnival may well be bombarded with bouyon beats while traditional calypsos could be relegated to the ‘also-ran’ category.

But some may see the influence of bouyon on carnival as a dynamic offshoot of carnival culture evolving. While others may see it as a threat to age-old customs and Dominica’s culture. keeping in mind that carnival was created by the people for the people.

========= My Opinion =========

Personally, I think there is nothing wrong with a bouyon bacchanal, as it has become an essential element of Dominica’s carnival provided it does not over-power calypso, and by extension, the other traditional culture.

Question: Is there enough room for a mutually beneficial co-existence of bouyon and calypso in Dominica’s carnival?

I agree. Both types of music can and should co-exist.
