Ramblings From The Nature Paradise of Dominica

In an article recently published in the Dominican Sun News entitled: Ban Buggery Laws - where Minister of Health, John Fabien wants buggery law banned to help reduce HIV/AIDS.

Speaking at the Eight Annual Meeting of the Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV/AIDS where it was revealed that HIV prevalence among homosexual and bisexual males in the Caribbean was high, and they’re 19 times as likely to contact HIV as the rest of the population.

According to Minister Fabien, when people see themselves as excluded or discriminated against and stigmatized, is promotes risky behavior , and by removing the Buggery Act will send a clear signal to the community that they are included in the society.

BTW: Caribbean countries are among 85 which have laws criminalizing sex between men. It is punishable by death in seven countries (none of which are in the Caribbean) and by imprisonment in 76 others.

Question: Do you think banning buggery laws in the Caribbean will help promote personal responsibility for safe sex homosexual and bisexual males?

———My Personal Note———

Personally, I think banning buggery laws will not reduce the amount of homosexual and Bisexual males from contracting the HIV virus. In fact, I believe it will make things worse.

Buggery is not only committed by males on males. Here is the definition: “intercourse via the anus, committed by a man with a man or woman”.

The state has the right to pass laws designed to protect public health.

However, the death penalty is extreme and inappropriate for an act that is probably committed because of a mental defect.

It will not make things worse. It will stay the same. Do you truly believe that men and women who are going to engage in anal intercourse will not do it because there is or is not a law against it? It is a sex act plain and simple.

Along with sodomy there is paraphilia, cunnilingus, fellatio, and fornication. All of which have their own potential health issues, are illegal in many parts of the world, yet are still enjoyed everywhere.

Heck, autoeroticism is probably the safest form of sex and even IT is outlawed in many places.

You know what? We should just all be celibate. That would just solve all of the world’s problems.

In all seriousness government just needs to stay out of the home and especially out of the bedroom.

Agreed, I have no idea why the government feels the need to regulate in the bedroom and acts between two consenting adults. I doubt anyone checks the laws on the books before deciding what acts they will participate in with each other. I was actually surprised to read that this law was on the books in Dominica. I’ve always wondered as well - who reports you? The person you committed the act with? That is definitely amusing.

Agreeing to this banning is giving homosexuals and bisexuals an extra inch. How does the saying go, “Give them and inch; they’ll take a yard?” Dominica, 20 years from now, embracing homosexuals????

As a “Christian” country, I never thought I would even hear something like this being up for discussion. This law is directed toward homosexuals and bisexuals. Dan, I see your point. Hey, if the laws need to redefined as far as who is allow or not allowed to do it, so be it. But there still needs to laws against homosexual act.

Dominica is a young country, and her laws should reflect her age. The old sexual laws were British laws which we inherited those laws were based on ignorance of the 16 century. Those laws excluded anyone who was different, preganancy outside of wedlock was thought to be a mental disorder. The only reason black people were allow to be pregnant outside wedlock was because we were not thought to be fully human but we were property like animals and provided a work force which was abused worst than animals.. Based on those laws black people as a whole would be outlawed as 90% of our population is born outside of wedlock. Now research has shown that homosexuality and pregnancy without the benifit of wedlock are not forms of mental ill health or disorder. The Europeans are righting their wrongs and we as a people instead of embracing research based laws concerning respect of humanity are seeking to drag ourselves back into the dark ages by promoting prejudices against our fellow humans who are different. Black people fought for civil rights yet we do not want others to enjoy the same rights we we fought for. Legalising gay and Lesbian communities will not affect the heterosexual community unless we are saying that White people should continue to view black people as less than human and inferior. Unless we are all afraid that we are maybe homosexual and it needs laws to make us heterosexual. Sodomy will always be a crime if it is entered in forcefully without consent just as rape is but adult consentual behaviour cannot be and should not be controlled by government. Governments have better issues to concern them in regards to running the country. Even the bible says that the marital bed is holy and undefiled. marriage means simple union. nothing else.

It is unwise to based laws on religion — any religion. Look at Afghanistan or most of the middle east under theocracy today, or Europe in the dark and middle ages.

Also, old laws may be very wise and shouldn’t be discarded merely because they’re not new. Many new laws are bad and have unintended consequences as well.

It is unwise to base laws on religion according to Dan, but it is crazy to say that someone who buggar have a mental defect. Not everything relates to mental defect. Both homosexuals and heterosexuals have individuals who have mental defect. Now are we saying that people who experiment in the privacy of their homes or wherever have a mental defect because the social norm is that they should have sex using the Vagina and the penis? There are evidence of all kinds of sexual intercourse from way back in history, so I don’t think that this is a mordern day affair only. Now Dominica like the rest of the Caribbean just need to get on the band wagon respect people and their business. Stop casting judgements and the government need to get their butts out of ministry and find funding for our healthcare system just like how they found money for the huge stadium. Legalizing Buggary isn’t going to help unless the soiecty is ready to respect those who are honest enough to reveal something that isn’t the norm. If they don’t rape anyone, I don’t see how it is wrong to hndle their own business in the privacy of their homes.

It is paramount that in a rational discourse, people apply logic correctly. Consider this illogical conclusion: All cows are animals. All cows are brown. Some animals are brown, therefore any brown animal is a cow. Of course that’s wrong.

Similarly, all homosexuals have a mental defect. Some heterosexuals have mental defects. Therefore, any heterosexual with a mental defect is a homosexual. (Wrong, he or she may have any of myriad other disorders.)

Also, saying that a person is ill is not a judgement, but rather a statement of fact.
