Experience Dominica – The Nature Island: Dominica Vacations | Exotic Vacations | Honeymoon Destination

Dominica weekly is a personal weblog about the nature island of Dominica.

Kayla Benjamin

Just one week after the official opening of the 2009 Carnival Season in Dominica, and National Carnival Parade.

Now one week later it’s the city of Portsmouth to launch their Carnival season with a grand opening parade along the Michael Douglas Boulevard and through the streets of Portsmouth.

For those who don’t know – Portsmouth is the former capital of Dominica and, with about 3000 inhabitants; Portsmouth is the second largest town of Dominica. It lies on the Indian River in the north of the island, part of the Saint John Parish. Cabrits National Park is located on a peninsula to the north of town.

Over the years, Portsmouth Carnival opening has developed into one of the premier carnival openings around Dominica, which attracts thousands of revelers from all over Dominica wanting to be apart of the parade.

Despite the late start, hundreds of spectators stayed to catch a glimpse of the opening parade. And with the local MFR Band serenading the massive crowd – made Portsmouth Carnival opening one to be remembered.

Here are some scenes from the 2009 Portsmouth Carnival Opening Parade. Enjoy!

If you are going to say something unflattering at the very least make sure you spell the words properly. Boring does not have a “u”

I find -who soever you are – you are the one who is bored. You have no idea of the value of this land called Dominica. It is bored to you because there are no casinos, no high life no big violence. Stop loving what others have and learn to appreciate the value of what you have.
I am from the beautifull island but have been out for almost 40 years but this is the only place in the world where there are no large groups of police men to conduct carnival because of violence. I think that if you do not love or like it, hold your negative comments to yourself. Only a low , uneductated person could relate such ridiculous things. You are no other than a FOOL.
At lease the air is not polluted.

First of all you unappreciative fool, learn how to spell!!! I am from Dominica and after ten years was just able to return last year, and was very upset that it wasn’t for carnival. Do you know what treasure you hold in your hands? Free fun without the police on your back watching your every move. Appreciate what you have for what it is and enjoy it; there are many of us out there who wish we could be the ones in DA enjoying the festivities instead of ignorant people like you!
