Purely Dominica

Dominica carnival revelers

Once upon a time carnival in Dominica was dominated by upbeat/catchy calypso music, but in recent times, there has been pervasive growth of Bouyon music.

Now many of the carnival stakeholders, fear that in years to come, Dominica’s carnival may well be bombarded with bouyon beats while traditional calypsos could be relegated to the ‘also-ran’ category.

But some may see the influence of bouyon on carnival as a dynamic offshoot of carnival culture evolving. While others may see it as a threat to age-old customs and Dominica’s culture. keeping in mind that carnival was created by the people for the people.

========= My Opinion =========

Personally, I think there is nothing wrong with a bouyon bacchanal, as it has become an essential element of Dominica’s carnival provided it does not over-power calypso, and by extension, the other traditional culture.

Question: Is there enough room for a mutually beneficial co-existence of bouyon and calypso in Dominica’s carnival?

The Chinese calendar may say that 2009 is the year of the Ox, but calypso fans everywhere speculate that this might be the year of De Karessa.

Fans agree that Karessa has given us a string of well written, well performed songs over the last few years.

In addition, it seems almost impossible to turn on the radio today and not hear his high-spirited performance of “Doh Play with the Pastor Rod“.

Despite his successes though, the coveted prize of Calypso King seems to have eluded the seasoned performer, whose stage persona and charisma is often compared to that of The Mighty Sparrow. So can Karessa do it?

With King Dice bowing out of this year’s competition, and Daddy Chess’ attention focused on Trinidad, has this cleared the path for Karessa to emerge as victor?

Does he have what it takes to carry the Crown? Check out the video clip of “Pastor Rod” and be the judge. As Karessa’s own words say (and one of my all time favorite calypso indicate) “We Go See…
