Experience Dominica – The Nature Island: Dominica Vacations | Exotic Vacations | Honeymoon Destination

Dominica weekly is a personal weblog about the nature island of Dominica.

Merry Christmas

This Christmas many of us are focused on celebrating and exchanging gifts but we should not forget to give thanks for the best gift of all.

The gifts of vast areas of pristine rainforest and green-topped mountains generously sprinkled with exotic rivers, streams and waterfalls.

No one in Dominica, even those who live in the heart of Roseau (Capital), is ever more than a few minutes away from up-spoilt nature.

Dominica does not have the sprawling white sand beaches of other Caribbean islands. However, in most places here the water’s edge is not overrun by commercial activities, giving us the very special gift of a fresh, peaceful and private seaside ambiance.

Other countries have similar natural attractions, but they’re usually in far-off regions. Our gift is that our nature sites are concentrated in a relatively small area, making them unusually accessible to residents and visitors. Almost without exception, our natural wonders are never more than a few hours away.

Let’s keep these gifts in mind when we go to church at Christmas to give our Creator His due. We must remember these gifts as we join with our families, friends and neighbours to eat our Christmas treats, and enjoy the holidays.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!

The traditions surrounding Christmas stir warm feelings in the hearts of many—young and old alike—all over the world. Families come together. Shoppers go into a shopping frenzy. Kids await the day they’ll receive their presents.

There is no other time quite like it, maybe that’s why for most people it’s the most wonderful time of the year.

The attachment people feel to these days isn’t surprising. After all, these traditions have been going on for hundreds of generations. Consider the following description in the Bible:

“For one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not” (Jer. 10:3-4)

. That description, clearly describing a Christmas tree, recorded hundreds of years before the birth of Christ.

Most people simply follow the customs of their family, region or nation without knowing where those customs originated or why they are kept. Most never ask about the origins of Christmas, why people exchange presents on this day, or even whether this holiday really represents the birth of Jesus Christ, after whom it is named!

What does God think of Christmas? Does the Almighty God command its observance? If not, does He forbid that we partake in it?

I’m curious to hear your opinion in the comment field below.

Nowadays it is hard not to notice that the true meaning of Christmas tends to get buried in the clatter and glitter of the ever-expanding commercial explosion that occurs every year at Christmas time.

As the Christmas season unfolds, shopping, feasting, drinking, dancing and exchanging of gifts, along with Santa Claus and Rudolph take center stage in many people’s lives. This non-religious surge diverts attention away from the real reason why we choose to celebrate Christmas at all.

There is clear evident that the frenzied commercial activities at the time of the year tend to saturate many people’s senses and harden their hearts. In a world choked with greed and vice, it is easy to lose sight of the true spiritual importance of Christmas – that Jesus Christ was born, lived, died, conquered death and is alive again.

That is why the true meaning of Christmas is found in our recognition and expression of the importance of family – our own families, the families of our relatives, friends and neighbours, and our entire human family.

What matters is not shopping and partying until you drop, or showing your face in church or lustily singing a few old hymns. What matters is that the Christmas gifts and gestures goodwill genuinely reflect the emotions in our hearts and that these should be the feelings towards each other that Christ commands and expect us to have.

But our flawed human nature does not permit us to express genuine love for each other all the time, which is why in other to embrace the true meaning of Christmas we need to reflect on the birth of Christ and reflect on the purity of His love and try our utmost best to live up to His example, even if it is only during the Christmas Holidays.
