Illinois senator to become first African-American executive in U.S. history…Change has come to America and the world.

Barack Hussein Obama II has been elected President of the United States of America. The now former junior senator from Illinois will become the first black president in U.S. history when he takes office in January 2009.

President-elect Obama was able to carry several key swing states that went to the Republicans in 2004, including Ohio.

Barack Obama will take control of the Oval Office while, at the same time, his party will control both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

In the next couple of weeks millions of Americans from all over the global will be going to the polls on November 4th to elect a new president, between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain. If Obama wins, would be the first black American President. But will Obama as the President of America be in the best interest of the Caribbean and the same can be said for John McCain.

Over on BBC Caribbean website, there is an on-going discussion forum on “US-Caribbean relations“, and how most of the Caribbean islands have excepted the US foreign policy under the Bush administration. More and more Caribbean migrants live in the United States that anywhere else in the world.

While relations between the US and the Caribbean have been good, there have nevertheless been policy differences on several issues, and the big questions by BCC Caribbean editors are:

Will get better with Obama?
Will there be gains with McCain?
Or will it be status quo no matter how it goes?

I think it’s safe to say, that most of us here in Dominica have had enough of this steady diet of American politics – it’s like everywhere I turn, someone or something is blasting information about the US Presidential Election. In fact, I know more about Obama and McCain than my local parliamentary representative and have certainly heard more from them than him.

On October 14th, 2008 CARICOM member states, except for Guyana signed the Economic Partnership Agreement (EDA) with the European Union. This new trade deal is aimed at attracting investment, lowering import tariffs and reducing poverty in the region, and it’s the first genuinely comprehensive North-South trade and development agreement in the global economy. But don’t ask me much more about the EPA, unless you want the meaning of the acronym and some insignificant mumbling. Based on the little I’ve heard, the EPA is going to impact us more than US elections.

This brings me to my next question. Why is there no media blitz to inform us about this new trade deal? Besides local radio programming and a daily two (2) minute slot just before the local nightly news – one would have thought that the EPA deal, would have gotten a lot more media attention in order to get the message across. Right about now, I’m sick to my stomach with the whole American political scene – I need a new diet. What about you ❓
