Nom Fwigè is a short film by Pierre Deschamps and Dominica (Bradt Travel Guide) author Paul Crask about a day in the life of a tree fern mask carver who lives a simple life with his family in the Kalinago Territory village of Mahaut River, Dominica.

He goes to the woods, cuts down a tree fern and carves it into masks which he sells on a roadside stall to tourists. While his wife, a basket weaver, cooks crabs she has caught from a nearby river.

Not only does this documentary keeps you interested, it brings too life the rich heritage and culture of the Kalinago (Carib) people in Dominica. And it’s also a celebration of people for whom the trappings and complexities of the modern world are not only beyond reach, they are inconsequential.

Great documentary, definitely worth watching. Dominica – LIFE IS HERE!

Nom tèw means Man of the soil in Créole and this is precisely who the main character of this 7 1/2 minutes short film is.

Jerry Makawest is a rastaman living in harmony with mother nature, Working hard to make his living.

This humble man knows everything about nature, the soil, the rivers and the sea and use it every day with respect. He takes from the soil and gives back in return.

This man would be a good ambassador and advisor for our government in this time of environment trouble. Enjoy!
