Dominica Carnival 2010 kicked into high gear Saturday afternoon with music, floats, and the annual parade that piled thousands of Dominicans and visitors alike along the street of Roseau.

Spectators couldn’t off asked for a better day, the weather as incredible and provide the requisite tropical heat to go along with the all masquerading going on .

Despite the limited resources for this year’s carnival, due to the global financial situation, many of the bands and gangs did turn out to take part in the opening parade. Flag Wavers, Bwa Bwas, Sensays, HiFi Bands, Mercury Band, and the seven beautiful Carnival Queen Contestants including reigning Calypso King “Karessa” and the reigning Carnival Queen Kayan Toussaint were all in attendance. All in all it was a great opening parade…can’t wait for carnival Monday and Tuesday.

BTW:The Dominica Festival Committee and the Dominica’s Carnival Development Committee has decided to keep the changes from last year Carnival Monday and Tuesday; where the usual parade of bands will be on Tuesday afternoon because of the persistent conflict with late J’Ouvert revelers. The T-shirt bands will parade on Monday instead of Tuesday.

Here are some scenes from Dominica’s “Real Mas” 2010 – Opening Carnival Parade. Enjoy ❗

Vendor at Market day with a Difference

Dominica is blessed with an abundance of foods that everyone will enjoy. Thanks to its rich fertile soil and temperate climate, many types of produce grow very easily here – for example:Citrus fruits, coconuts, bananas, coffee, cocoa, spices and many others. All thanks to the local farmers and markets vendors.

That’s why, to highlights the farmers and vendors contributions to the national development, “Market Day with a Difference” is observed on the last Saturday in October at the Roseau Market and markets around the island.

This years Market Day with a Difference was filled with excitement and beautiful colours. Many of the farmers/vendors came out dressed in their National “Creole” Wear, while showcasing the variety of produce (Organic or Non-Organic) Dominica has to offer.

Here are some scenes taken from Market Day with a Difference 2009 at the Roseau Market…Enjoy!

In previous posts I talked about the Problems of Tourism, and how Tourism is largely a self-involved business which basically involves the government and a business design merely to cater to travelers to our nature island.

As it stands now, Dominica spends millions on promotion, and the despite all the positive feedback we’re getting from travelers to Dominica there are still tourists leaving with same one complaints about the lack of proper accommodation and the problem of flights to and from our nature isle.

Let’s not underestimate the power of the spoken word. When dissatisfied tourists return home, they pass on their experiences to friends and family, negating the funds spent to advertise the country. That way we lose repeat and new business.

Enough whining and procrastination. Let’s move on to finally cleaning up Roseau and the other neglected areas of the island. Rather than wasting time talking about airy-fairy ideas such as the free movement of people throughout the Caribbean, and other similarly irrelevant issues?

The ministry of Tourism should get on with the revitalisation process. The government budget has been approved, it’s time we put our money to work in other to strengthen our fragile tourism industry.
