In previous posts I talked about the Problems of Tourism, and how Tourism is largely a self-involved business which basically involves the government and a business design merely to cater to travelers to our nature island.

As it stands now, Dominica spends millions on promotion, and the despite all the positive feedback we’re getting from travelers to Dominica there are still tourists leaving with same one complaints about the lack of proper accommodation and the problem of flights to and from our nature isle.

Let’s not underestimate the power of the spoken word. When dissatisfied tourists return home, they pass on their experiences to friends and family, negating the funds spent to advertise the country. That way we lose repeat and new business.

Enough whining and procrastination. Let’s move on to finally cleaning up Roseau and the other neglected areas of the island. Rather than wasting time talking about airy-fairy ideas such as the free movement of people throughout the Caribbean, and other similarly irrelevant issues?

The ministry of Tourism should get on with the revitalisation process. The government budget has been approved, it’s time we put our money to work in other to strengthen our fragile tourism industry.

Photo of Bwa Bwa - traditional carnival costume band at Dominica's carnival

With the anticipation of The Real Mas 2009 at its peak, the official parade and opening of Dominica Carnival 2009 got on the way from the Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard to the Carnival City (LIME City) at the Pottersville Savannah.

The Streets of Roseau literally came alive with sights and sounds of the Real Mas 2009. Hundreds of spectators gathered along the Carnival route to a catch glimpse of the opening parade and to welcome in the 2009 Carnival Season.

Despite the limited resources for this year’s carnival, due to the global financial situation, many bands and gangs came out to take part in the opening parade. Flag Wavers, Bwa Bwas, Sensays, HiFi Bands, Go Girls Band, Carnival Corner… the seven beautiful Carnival Queen Contestants and the reigning Carnival Queen Marah Walter were all in attendance.

BTW: this year the Dominica Festival Committee has made some changes to the Carnival Monday and Tuesday jump up. The usual parade of bands will now be held on Tuesday afternoon because of the persistent conflict with late J’Ouvert revelers. The T-shirt bands will parade on Monday instead of Tuesday.

Here are some scenes from the Real Mas 2009 – Opening Carnival Parade. Enjoy :!:

Merry Christmas

This Christmas many of us are focused on celebrating and exchanging gifts but we should not forget to give thanks for the best gift of all.

The gifts of vast areas of pristine rainforest and green-topped mountains generously sprinkled with exotic rivers, streams and waterfalls.

No one in Dominica, even those who live in the heart of Roseau (Capital), is ever more than a few minutes away from up-spoilt nature.

Dominica does not have the sprawling white sand beaches of other Caribbean islands. However, in most places here the water’s edge is not overrun by commercial activities, giving us the very special gift of a fresh, peaceful and private seaside ambiance.

Other countries have similar natural attractions, but they’re usually in far-off regions. Our gift is that our nature sites are concentrated in a relatively small area, making them unusually accessible to residents and visitors. Almost without exception, our natural wonders are never more than a few hours away.

Let’s keep these gifts in mind when we go to church at Christmas to give our Creator His due. We must remember these gifts as we join with our families, friends and neighbours to eat our Christmas treats, and enjoy the holidays.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!
