Experience Dominica – The Nature Island: Dominica Vacations | Exotic Vacations | Honeymoon Destination

Dominica weekly is a personal weblog about the nature island of Dominica.

Soon after I posted my Subway review, the next morning I received an email from my friend Dan Tanner, with a review of his own. He claims his review of Royer’s Bar will put my Subway review to shade…here goes!…

Dan writes: One needs to go to the end of the earth, or at least to the extreme southwestern end of Dominica to the village of Scott’s Head, to find the epitome of fine seafood dining – at Roger’s Bar. We discovered Roger’s several years ago when we stayed overnight in Scott’s Head.

At the time, it consisted of a wooden hut, and our host and chef had to draw his water and wash dishes at the public water tap across the road. But, my-oh-my, was his food ever delicious! The specialty is seafood, and the side dishes of vegetables are also simply divine.

At first, the humble accommodation was off-putting to mainland tourists, but word of the superb fare overcame the trepidations of many, and buoyed by its excellence, the establishment has flourished, and now diners can enjoy seating in a concrete structure with a view across Scott's Head Bay as they dine. Our home in Dominica (we’ll retire to it next year) is at least a two hour’s drive away in the northeast, but we tend to make the trip to Roger’s at least once on our vacations because it is worth the four-hour round trip. And that’s saying a lot for one who hates driving!

We are always glad we came to Roger’s. The food is out of this world. The host/chef, “Roger” Caesar, is always pleasant and kind. The view adds to the dining experience. And, the prices are moderate. It’s small and out of the way, so it is always a good idea to call ahead for a reservation. The number is ➡ 448-7851. Call a day or two beforehand and you can usually arrange specialty dishes.

Roger’s represents the very finest in Dominican cuisine, and should not be missed if one wishes to truly enjoy and experience the flavor of the Nature Island.
