Michael jackson

Many might say that Michael Jackson’s success was his downfall – that he was so big, successful, so popular that he become troubled and isolated. But there are many other lessons that we can learn from the life of Michael Jackson.

There is the issue of child care – whether we choose to believe the rumours that Jackson was abused physically and mentally when he was child, rumoured abuse may have contributed to his sometimes incomprehensible behavior.

In addition, Michael’s life underscores the negative impact of the entertainment industry on the lives of child entertainers; the industry may rob child entertainers of their innocence.

However the bigger issue is one of self acceptance. It is rumoured that the transformation of Michael’s Negroid features to Caucasian may have been self-induced. That is one of the major reasons why many African Americans say Michael Jackson betrayed the black community, that he may have been ashamed of the colour of his skin. But others respond, by quoting Michael’s lyrics: “It don’t matter if you’re black or white.”

President Barack Obama did prove that content of character transcends race. In Michael Jackson’s case it was star power.

This is a warning to all the seekers of fame and fortune – these are cruel masters that rob their victims of not only their privacy but the opportunity to be like us-ordinary folk. Rest in Peace, MJ – the greatest entertainer who ever lived.

Sometimes we have so many varying responsibilities in our daily lives, that there are times we feel we cannot possibly make it all work. We may feel overwhelmed and ending each day feeling hopelessly behind schedule.

However, as island people should realize that regardless of how frustrating life can be at times, that these are the parameters that make up our lives, and we owe it to ourselves to find a way to make it work.

Rather than buckling under the pressure of a never ending to-do list, we should so take a few steps back to view the larger perspective.

Like the Prime Minister of any Caribbean island, we must first realize that we cannot do every job ourselves. The first step to sanity is learning how to delegate some of the responsibility to other people, whether by paying someone to clean our house from time to time, or trading childcare duties with another parent. Accepting the adjustments needed to make our lives work is an essential ingredient to being at peace with our situation.

At the end of the day, we must come to terms with changing what we can and accepting what we cannot change. There are times where after a full day of work, errands, or picking up after the kids – preparing a healthy home-cooked meal every night after can be a bit excessive.

Accepting this temporary state of affairs and trusting in our ability to get back on track when the time is right, we gracefully accept our life as it is, letting go of perfectionism and taking on life as it stands.
