Friday 12th March 2010 marks the third World Glaucoma Day, and Dominica joins the rest of the world in recognizing World Glaucoma Day.

Glaucoma is group of eye diseases characterized by abnormally high intraocular fluid pressure, damaged optic disk, hardening of the eyeball and partial to complete loss of vision.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in Dominica and one of the leading causes of blindness in the world.

You might think that you are too young to have glaucoma, you still may be at risk. Now is the time to find out. You can slow the progression of damage to your optic nerve if it has already started. Early detection and treatment are the only ways to prevent vision impairment and blindness from glaucoma.

This year the world glaucoma body recommended that the week of March 7th – March 13th be used for various activities in that respect. One of the activities planned throughout the Caribbean region, is a “Walk for Sight” – held simultaneously in each island on March 13.

The plan is that the walks taking place in each Island will be video-taped, and the recorded walks from all of the islands will be combined into a giant “Caribbean Glaucoma March Video” for broadcast around the world.

So spare a thought today for those who can’t read this, and help Prevent uncalled blindness. Get an eye checkup today!
