High Court Judge Davidson Baptiste has ordered six members of the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) to pay cost of EC$204,000 after losing their court battle against the Speaker of the House, the Attorney General and the Sergeant-at-Arms.
Justice Baptiste ruled that the speaker, Alix Boyd-knight did nothing wrong when she first altered the question to be posed by the opposition on the Order and her subsequent refusal to allow Earl Williams to ask a supplementary question.

The Judge then dismissed the motion by the Opposition members and set aside March 3, 2008 for both parties to address him on issue of cost. The claimants in the matter are Earl Williams, Edison James, Claudius Sanford, Norris Charles, Nicholls Esprit and Ron Green.

Mahaut Man Killed

A man believed to be a police informant was found dead in a Mahaut house with a gunshot wound to the head. According to reports 27-year-old Allen “screech” Roberts was found in a sitting position on the evening of February 28 with a gun in his right hand. The police are seeking the help of the member of the public to solve this crime.


After just over two hours of deliberation, a nine-member jury on March 3 found Clem Philbert guilty of murder. Justice Davidson Baptiste has set March 17 as the date for sentencing after a welfare and psychological report. Philbert was accused of killing his friend Joseph ‘Pajoe’ St. Louis whom he had known since 2002.

Local Gov’t Integral for Economic Growth

International Management Consultant, Dr Trevor Hamilton has advised major stakeholder within local government here that they need to take their rightful stances as meaningful contributors to growth of the economy.

Speaking to parliamentarians and local government officers on proposals for local government reform at the Fort Young, Hamilton urged the gathering to actively contribute to the building of the economy by working with central government on pertinent issues regarding the municipalities.

108-year-old Louisa Joseph Laid to Rest

Prime Minister Roosevelt was among hundreds of mourners gathered in Vielle Case on Saturday afternoon for the funeral of 108-year-old Louisa Joseph of Vielle Case affectionately known as ‘Awo’.

Prior to her death she was granted Dominica’s highest award, the Dominica Award of Honour.

PM Promise Major Changes By 2010

Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit has promised the nation that, in addition to the project presently being undertaken, there would be hundreds of millions of dollars spent by his government to enhance the infrastructure of the country by the time the 2010 General Elections come around.

He also said that as part of his government’s Housing Revolution Programme, numerous Dominicans have benefited from low-income housing and the ability to purchase land at minimal cost.

Advisory Committee to Analyze Cost of Living

Government has established a National Advisory Committee (NAC) in an attempt to regulate price control and significantly decrease the high cost of living presently plaguing the country.

In an address to the nation February 28, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit explained that the committee’s responsibilities were two-fold and following its meeting, would be able to adequate advise government on the way forward.

Optimistic About Agriculture

The ambassador to the People’s Republic of China is optimistic about agriculture in Dominica, despite a number of setbacks caused by hurricane Dean which struck Dominica last year.

During an official visit to the Hillsborough Horticulture Center in Layou last week, Ambassador Deng Bouqing who was accompanied by President Dr Nicholas Liverpool among others said he has hope in the centre and agriculture sector here.

Windward Captain Optimistic

Captain of the Windward Islands cricket team Grenadian Rawle Lewis said his team is looking for full points in their game with Trinidad and Tobago on March 7 at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium.

The Windward’s who were at the bottom of the table in the Carib Beer regional competition, collected full points against the combined colleges and campuses team in St Lucia.
