Your Dominica Morning news roundup for Wednesday September 10th, 2008:

It was rumoured early this week that that Digicel’s Rising Star, Tarina Simon, is having complications in obtaining the promised recording contract. After singing her way through the hearts of the judges and the many fans and supporters, Ms. Simon is expecting to receive what was promised.

Consumers against high utility rates CAHUR is gearing up for a protest action against DOMLEC and Government in an effort to bring relief to consumers of electricity. This is a good thing, because these electricity bills issued by DOMLEC are ridiculous – it’s high time Dominicans for their rights.

Also the Bense community continues their protect action. Villagers are saying that they have found worms and snakes in their water. Wow…worms and snakes?

It seems that the Former opposition leader Earl Williams have found himself in another money scandal. This time one of his clients, Desiree John, wife of the former Prime Minister Patrick John is seeking legal advice to recover some $190,000.00. Way to go earl!!!

In some other disturbing news, a male individual broke and entered into the Prince Margaret Hospital (PMH) in the wee hours of Saturday posing as a doctor and attempted to assault an eight year old girl there. What a sick pervert – This makes me sick to my stomach. Hats off to this brave little girl.

Meanwhile, the body of a Ross University medical student was discovered in Portsmouth in the vicinity of a well known Disco in the Lagoon area Saturday morning dead. If my memory serves my correctly, this is the second death at Ross University in two years. The first death resulted in a fatal vehicular accident.

He was actually not a student. He name was Syed. He was in the in-METTP-medical educator training program, considered Ross faculty. He was 39 from Pakistan. He had practiced as a doctor for 7 years in internal medicine. He was living in US in Chicago prior to coming to Ross. He told people that he had a girlfriend of 3 yrs who he left behind in the states, by her choice. He lived somewhere on Banana trail. He started mixing with locals right away. He got involved in local night life. Talked about Big Papas to his friends at Ross. He walked around alone at night. We spoke to him about safety. He had no fear of anything happening because he said in Pakistan it is their culture to stay home out of heat during day, and go out at night.

What was the cause of his death? What were the circumstances? There are already rumors. Was he seeking drugs? Did he make an unwelcome homosexual approach to someone? The police are not saying much about the circumstances of his death. The university is keeping it very quiet. A professor said that the police are saying “no foul play detected”.

I know Dr. Qasim very well and was shocked to hear about his death. As far I know he was neither in drug nor a homesexual. He use to drink but left 2 years ago and become religous .He was very very friendly person. Also looking for new friends he helped lot of Medical Students by teaching them offering them notes and books. He got jobs for lot of his friends because of his contacts.

I spoke to his brother, the family is totally devasted by the youngest siblings death in the family. His parents are still alive and is trying to find the real cause of death. The are looking to go after anybody and leaving it to Allah ( God) for his revenge in case of foul play.
