INNOVATIVE LOOK TO THIS YEAR’S NATURE ISLAND LITERARY FESTIVAL AND BOOK FAIR. New voices…new technology…free books!

The third Nature Island Literary Festival and Book Fair runs this year from Friday 6th August to Sunday 8th August at the UWI Open Campus, Elmshall Road, Roseau. The children’s festival takes place on Saturday morning at Alliance Francaise. All events are free.

Chairman of the organizing committee, Alwin Bully, says that this year’s festival will be both innovative and enjoyable.

“The audience can look forward to dynamic readings by Caribbean and Dominican authors and have an excellent time interacting with the overseas presenters. We hope that our local writers, especially the younger ones, will see the festival as an incentive to learn and further their own talents.”

The festival is delighted to welcome the following overseas visitors: Cynthia Wilson, Esther Phillips and Philip Nanton from Barbados; Kei Miller, Esther Figueroa and Ian Randle from Jamaica, and Muhammad Muwakil from Trinidad. Leading Dominican writers will also be performing. Both regional and local artists will explore a rich range of topics.

E-books feature in this year’s festival. “We always try to be innovative and look at new aspects of writing and publishing. This year we’re very excited to have a presentation of the three e-books – Kindle, the Nook and iPad.” There will also be a raffle for a Kindle.

A new feature of the Book Fair is a “book exchange”, organised in conjunction with Upper Lane Recycle, in Roseau. Bring a book and get one free.

Other elements of the festival include: open mic (anyone can get up to read or recite their own writing), wonderful films, music, great food, competitions and prizes.

The popular workshops – on poetry, book illustration, fiction, memoir writing, documentary films, and internet marketing – run on 31 July, 5 August and 7 August. Register for all workshops by emailing [email protected] or ask for Kelly-Ann Williams at 448-2045 during working hours.

Hi Dominica

I am living in Guadeloupe. I am a writer. I write in french and in creole. I try to practice english language.
I followed your book fair on Kairi FM and that has liked me. After having visited Dominica I wrote a poem in french on your charming island and I published it in a poems collect (Le paradis terrestre) twenty years ago. I translate it in english and I am happy to send it to you.
You’ll find on my site: http://maricelbaltus.unblog.fr/2010/08/08/charming-dominica/

Good reading
