Purely Dominica

Known for its delicious fruit production, Dominica has adapted to the challenges of recent hurricanes by experimenting with new, sustainable crops like avocados, coconuts, guavas, and passionfruit.

One place you won’t want to miss is Free Up Farms, located in the lush green rainforests of Dominica’s mountains, just a 30-minute drive south of Portsmouth. The farm was established in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017 and focuses on permaculture and regenerative agriculture.

Spanning 7 acres on an old citrus and avocado farm, Free Up Farms grows over 40 different types of fruits and herbs, including bananas, papayas, passionfruit, grapefruit, oranges, thyme, lemongrass, cranberry hibiscus leaf, and more! Be sure to try their fresh fruit smoothies, passionfruit, and coffee—they’re absolutely fantastic!

Call D Shots, a roadside stand where you can sample unique and delicious local treats, is another must-see. I personally recommend trying the strong, medicinal drink made from herbs and anise, followed by a ginger shot. And if you’re feeling peckish, grab some fried tuna, a cheese bake, and a regular bake with pepper sauce. And for a truly authentic experience, finish it off with a culantro shot with some of the friendly locals!
