Undoubtedly frighten by the government, the Integrity in Public Office Commission appears to be no protection against the retribution for persons who have genuinely acted in the public interest.

It seems the commission is more concerned about the reputation of the persons who have been accused of corrupts acts than reports made by law abiding citizens on issues of corruption in Dominica.

Presently, most Dominicans will not risk victimization, losing their jobs or possibly incurring civil liability for exposing corruption in the public sector.

It’s obvious that the IPO Act has to be amended if it is to serve as an instrument in the fight against corruption. In addition, there is also the need for fine-tuning the system of checks and balances particularly in the office of the Auditor General and others key stakeholders, if we’re to become more effective in combating corruption.

If we do take these actions urgently, many of our regional neighbours including Dominicans at home and abroad will think that we are an immoral nation lacking the will to demand honesty and accountability from persons we have appointed or elected to take care of our business.

Opposition leader, Ron Green is the first leader of any political party here to adopt a “Green Economy” as his foundation for the next general election.

Mr Green hopes to adopt a clean and green economic policy for Dominica, and fight to promote Dominica as the Nature Island of the World – a fight that will aid in sustainable environment development and the creation of sustainable jobs.

Though he is yet to detail the ramifications of “green economy” concept for Dominica, I believe that Green’s idea of a green economy for Dominica is innovative, challenging and not a minute too late.

It’s obvious that business as usual, handouts as usual and corruption as usual in our nature isle is not getting us where we want to go.

A greener economy for Dominica will no doubt create cheaper energy that will in turn create new businesses and sustainable jobs for many Dominicans. What do you think about a new energy policy for Dominica?

What can we as Caribbean people do to be more responsible for their financial situations?

What can we teach our children so that when the next economic downturn comes along they’ll be prepared.

One possible answer is to become better educated about what it takes to be financially secure. It’s no easy task, under the present circumstances, when so many of the different islands are struggling to get a financial foot-hold on their economy.

But besides educating our children about financial responsibility, we must keep a positive attitude, and more importantly passing on this behavior to our kids.

Here are some simple lessons we can teach kids as a part of their long-term preparation for adulthood. Not forget the basics: spend less, save and (cautiously) invest more, and always follow a plan.

1. Start by being honest with yourself about your situation, and then take positive steps to better understand and cope with your present situation.

2. Manage and track your spending.

3. Start a savings account, and save as much as you can.

4. Reduce credit card spending — try your best to stay out off debt.

5. Continue to learn — you are protecting yourself when you maintain a marketable skill.

6. Maintain health insurance.

7. Open a retirement account and add to it monthly. Take responsibility for your own future.

Even in a fluctuating job market, consider yourself capable, and acknowledge your potential by maintaining a positive attitude, and being kind to yourself. Recognizing the significance of our contributions and the validity of our participation, is an important factor in the development of our self-concept. It also helps build the confidence we’ll need to get over the financial hump.
