There is no doubt that in the last few years, tourism has actually brought in much more foreign exchange to Dominica that the once dominant banana industry. According to the latest statistics, tourism contributed EC$179 million in 2007.

But tourism can do more, much more, particularly in meeting Dominica’s need for jobs, sustainable jobs.

The only way we in Dominica can get on sustainable path of development, is to help these onging operations and enterprises that continues to offer sustainable growth in employment; for example the local hotels and guest-houses who are struggling to make ends meet.

Despite these challenging, global economic times, tourism continues to offers an opportunity for job creation and foreign exchange earnings.

Government needs to demonstrate more confidence into the Tourism sector by providing more assistance, in particular, the many Dominicans who have invested in hotels and guest houses – they’ve been literally struggling to survive for years. As we all know, some have been forced to actually close their doors.

It is time for the government to put some of the tourism revenue earned back into the local tourism industry, which in turn will create more sustainable jobs for more Dominicans.

The Dominica International Ecofest 2009 celebrates the need for action to preserve our earth, and is aiming to showcase the inspiring environmental awareness here in Dominica.

EcoFest also examines whether or not the progress mankind has made is worthy of celebration.

The International EcoFest to be held at Rosalie Forest Eco Lodge, Dominica, between May 1st and 8th 2009, under the theme ‘A celebration of the world’s progress on saving our beautiful planet.’

The event is being held in collaboration with/the participation of The EcoClub, The International ecotourism Society, The Sustainable Living Initiative Centre, (SLIC) Dominica, Responsible Travel, and Eco-Tropical resorts, the Biogas helpline, as well as the Environmental Coordinating Unit of The Government of Dominica, and others.

Eco-fest 2009 will showcase a wide array of local music, with a different kind of local band playing each day ranging from Calypso, to Jin Ping, to Reggae to Steelpan. The festival will also host a mini Eco conference, covering a wide range of sustainability issues, guest speakers, Eco trade show, and local craft workshop.

One of the main highlights of the festival is a workshop on BioGas – learn how to do it; meet the experts – where the organizers of the ecofest will be installing a Biogas plant on site during the week long event,in collaboration with the BioGas helpline.

Tonight, Saturday, March 28 from 8:30pm to 9:30pm Earth Hour invites one billion people in more than 2800 cities representing 83 countries to turn off their lights for one hour in their local time zone.

On this day, cities around the world, including Paris, Sydney, London, Cairo, New York, Los Angeles and Cape Town, will join together to demonstrate their commitment to energy conservation and sustainability.

Here’s how you can participate:

• All you have to do to Vote Earth is turn your lights out for one hour tonight, Saturday, March 28 from 8:30pm to 9:30pm local time, in your city. Your light switch is your vote!
• Set your computer’s power management and save up to $60 on your electricity bill and nearly half a ton of C02 over the next twelve months. Climate Savers Computing Initiative provides instructions on how you can save electricity all year long through efficient computing.
• Join Earth Connect and share your opinions about climate change through blogs, e-mails, and Twitter. The goal is to gather one billion words to present at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December.
• Pledge to Power Down for the Planet and create a video to teach others about the importance of energy efficient computing in the fight against climate change.

Earth Hour is about more than dimming lights for sixty minutes; it’s all about making a commitment to reduce energy consumption throughout the year. As world’s population grows, we want to make sure we minimize our impact on the Earth’s climate through responsible environmental practices every hour, every day.
