The second hike at this year’s Hike Fest highlighted segment four of the Waitukubuli National Trail (in reverse) – a moderate hike idle for nature lovers.

The 11.7 km hike started at centre of Dominica in an area called Pond Casse (which means Broken Bridge in Creole), and ended at the Laudat recreational Centre.

On this segment of the Waitukubuli National Trail you will travel through the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and offers views of several mountains, encounters of natural attractions and reminds us of Dominica’s rugged nature and rich heritage.

Some of the Areas of Interest includes: View of Morn Micotrin, Morn Watt, Morn Jaune, Morn Nichols, Morn Anglais, Morne Trois Piton, and Sulphur Springs.

Nearby Attractions: Boiling Lake, Fresh Water Lake, Middleham Falls, Striking Hole, Chemain Letang Historic Trail, Trafalgar Falls, and Boeri Lake & Trail. Here are some images from along the trail…enjoy!

Not only is Middleham Falls a marvelous work of nature, cascading off a rainforest ridge and falling perhaps 150 to 200 feet into a tranquil blue swimmable pool, but also Dominica has done itself proud by making a nice, clean, comfortable trail-head facility and a remarkably well-made and well-maintained trail into the falls that made the hike reasonable even for this 70-year-old.

It is access, after all, that makes the nature most enjoyable, and Dominica can be justifiably proud of the job it has done with its presentation of Middleham Falls. The pathway was graveled and its steps were all in place.

There were solid bridges and railings where necessary, and we saw signs of trail markings repainted so recently that some paint drops were still on plant leaves. Great job!

To get to the trail entrance we used (there are others) follow the road from Roseau to Laudat. Before reaching Laudat you’ll see a large prominent sign on your left. The trailhead facility, with rain shelter, large sign maps giving clear directions (and the trail is well signposted too, and has rest benches) is about ¼ mile down the drivable track. Go, and enjoy Middleham Falls.

Located deep in the Morne Trois Piton National Park is Dominca’s tallest waterfall – The Middleham Falls. At 150 feet, you’ll need to take a one-hour hike through fern- and orchid-filled rainforest.

This spectacular waterfall can be accessed for 2 trailheads. Start from either cochrane (turn inland by the Old Mill Cultural Centre in Canefield) or from the roseau Valley, lookout a large sign on the left just before the village of laudat.

On the way to and from the falls, look for and smell the stinking Hole, which is filled with thousands of bats.

And don’t forget to take your bathing suit – you might just need it. Are you familiar with Middleham Falls? Share what you know with other travelers in the comments

Tip: Make sure your camera is well protected (w/ a waterproof camera bag or in plastic bags), to prevent the large amount of spray given off by the Falls from entering your camera.
